I hope I'm wrong about this, as the implications are beyond bad.

(27,498 posts)The loyalty meeting associated with Saddam Hussein refers to a televised purge of the Ba'ath Party leadership on July 22, 1979. The brutal event, staged shortly after Hussein became President of Iraq, cemented his control through fear.
Key details of the 1979 purge:
The setting: In a meeting room in Baghdad, a visibly terrified man was brought forward to confess his role in an alleged plot against the new regime. He then read a list of alleged co-conspirators.
The accusation: Saddam Hussein claimed to have discovered a Syrian-backed conspiracy to overthrow the government.
The purge: As names were called from the list, armed guards led 68 high-ranking party officials out of the room, many never to return.
The reaction: While some officials wept in disbelief, the remaining members of the party, visibly shaken, began chanting their absolute loyalty to Saddam to save themselves.
The executions: Hussein later ordered those who remained to take up weapons and execute their former colleagues, forcing them to become complicit in his crimes and testing their loyalty. Human rights groups later confirmed that at least 22 men were executed that day, with many more imprisoned or exiled.
The purpose: The event was a meticulously staged piece of political theater designed to eliminate rivals and send a clear message to the nation's political elite that any questioning of Hussein's authority would be met with brutal consequences.
