The man enlisted to save James Comey

CHICAGO — In the run-up to former FBI Director James Comey’s indictment, there was no question who would step up to represent him.

Friend and former colleague Patrick Fitzgerald, who served as U.S. attorney in Chicago for over a decade, would spring from retirement to be his man.

Nationally, Fitzgerald is best known for his role as special prosecutor in the investigation into a CIA leak that brought charges against I. Lewis “Scooter” Libby.

But to Chicago, Fitzgerald is something of a legend. The George W. Bush appointee left an indelible legacy as a scrupulous, hard-charging prosecutor who disrupted the kinds of crooked backroom deals that were long a trademark of Illinois politics.

It lasted two weeks, and the experienced, older lawyer made an absolute fool of the young lawyer. The old pro had prepared for everything, had an immediate counter to every action. The young guy was totally flummoxed, his case was sloppy and poorly prepared, I almost felt sorry for him as his case fell to pieces.

Fitzgerald will make a fool out of Halligan. A guy who was at the top of his profession, handled hundreds of cases and trials, was a top-rank lawyer with a national reputation. Halligan has never tried a case. Experienced and motivated prosecutors have walked away from this case because there is no solid evidence.

This prosecution will be farcical. We've already seen the ridiculous charging document.
