The cool thing about gold as a material is that it can be pounded extremely thin, so thin that it can be translucent. There is very little gold used to make this look, even if it is the usual 23.5K.

It is pretty cheap, and looks pretty tacky. You probably pay more in labor than materials. An ounce of gold will cover a lot of surface area. Sure, it would be more pricey than Krylon, but not that much.
