(1,329 posts)It might possibly be old fashioned but that's at least the way it used to work. You were just Mrs. (your first name) (his last name).

(133,103 posts)Husband'sLastName" in the address field. She politely told me I was very wrong and I should always address a married woman as "Mrs. Husband'sFirstName Husband'sLastName". So I had not heard that the way I initially did it meant divorce but that is basically the only time she criticized me that I can remember (she was a gratious person).

(117 posts)Actually, it was always "Mrs." and then her HUSBAND's first name and last name. My grandmother would always shorten it to "Mrs. Pete" or "Mrs. Tom" when speaking of her neighbors. When I read the old church cookbooks the recipes were always attributed to "Mrs. (husband's first name) (last name)". No female names in the book! Furthermore, when my husband and I welcomed our first child and wanted to place a birth announcement in the paper, they insisted that we be listed as "Mr. and Mrs. HIS NAME" only. When I insisted that MY name be included, as I was the one who had actually given birth, the newspaper said that form was used only for single, unwed mothers, and proceeded to run the announcement with my name only! This was in 1975. Back when women needed their husband's permission to get birth control. And a credit card.
"Mrs." was a title, designating "wife of." Like Duke of York is a title. There could be a string of Mrs. Tom Jones, if Tom Jones married a string of women. It was not actually the woman's NAME, just her title, or status. Therefore, I believe it was incorrect to say "Mrs. Mary Jones," although that seems to be accepted practice today. Thank goodness..

(134,035 posts)When I was married, if anyone made the mistake of adressing me as Mrs. (husband's furst name) (husband's last name ), I inforned them there was no such person. This included mail (this was back in the last millenium), which was promptly "returned to sender, addressee unknown".

(16,890 posts)to keep the husband's name so remaining Mrs-Mr- would have been the norm.

(134,035 posts)made reference to her new dating app. Is that for real? Seems a strange thing for the martyr's brand new widow to be doing, but of course people grieve in different ways, and she has an empire to run.
