How the potential government shutdown would impact travel

A federal government shutdown is looming, with the government set to run out of funding at midnight from Sept. 30 to Oct. 1.

Will TSA work in a shutdown?

Transportation Security Administration workers at airport checkpoints will continue to work -- without pay -- during a shutdown.

According to Department of Homeland Security documents, 58,488 employees out of the total TSA workforce of 61,475 will be retained during a shutdown.

Will my flight get canceled?

No. Commercial flights will continue to operate and airline employees will not be impacted.

How a government shutdown would impact your money: student loans, Social Security, investments, and more

Threats of government shutdowns have become a regular, self-inflicted crisis when political leaders in Washington use funding for government operations as a bargaining chip in other partisan fights.

Congress has a Sept. 30 deadline — that's midnight Tuesday — before federal agency budgets expire, and in deeply divided Washington, Republican leaders are trying to win over enough Democrats to pass legislation to pay existing bills and avoid lights out in the nation's capital.

Should the worst come to pass, here's how a government shutdown would affect your finances.

Federal programs and Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid

Social Security checks and electronic payments would still be delivered even if the government shuts down. Medicare and Medicaid programs are also protected from federal funding shortfalls.
