Mitt Romney reveals he personally urged Biden administration to preemptively pardon Donald Trump

Former Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney revealed Monday night that he called the White House during the Biden administration when Special Counsel Jack Smith was investigating Donald Trump to urge President Joe Biden to preemptively pardon him.

“I called a member of the White House, one of the senior advisers to President Biden. And I said, if the Justice Department decides to indict President Trump, I hope President Biden will immediately eliminate that, and that he will provide a pardon immediately. Why? Number one, I don’t want the anger and the hate and the vitriol. But number two: We just can’t begin to be prosecuting political opponents,” Romney said during a conversation with CNN’s Dana Bash at an event hosted by Drew University in Morristown, New Jersey.

“Pardoning at that point would have been a way to make that very clear,” added Romney.

“What did they say back to you?” asked Bash.

Sep 2025

I don't think elections should have anything to do whether Trump or anyone commits a crime. If it comes to anyone else a jury may not find a person guilty the prosecutor should pursue charges if they have enough evidence. Same with Trump but with Trump he would have at least been found guilty in the federal cases. Don't know enough about the Georgia case but the grand jury in Arizona wanted to indict Trump but the prosecutors there begged them not to which I think was a mistake.

Those outside of the swing states may not care much about Trump's crimes or maybe even people in swing states don't care that much but the Republicans contested Arizona's electoral votes for Biden at the moment the Jan 6 rioters entered the Capitol.

I think the mistake was not electing Harris so the cases against Trump could move forward and he would have likely received guilty verdicts.

https://thiswillhold.substack.com/p/she-won-part-ii-seven-judges-direct

Just seven days after Trump lost the 2020 election to President Joe Biden, the Senate rammed through Judge Aileen Cannon—a Federalist Society loyalist—to the federal bench, again via the nuclear option. The seat? It would later oversee Trump’s classified documents case.

Think about that. Before he even walked out of the White House with stolen materials and a failed insurrection attempt, Donald Trump had already secured the judge who would protect him. He wasn't just breaking the law—he was fortifying his legal escape route in advance, with an assist from Senate Republicans.

Biden could have explained to the American people what Trump did, what the evidence was and then issued a pardon. He could have said he was doing it to heal the country.

Would it have made any difference? I don't know.

A bigger difference maker would have been for Biden to have announced that he wasn't running for a second term in the fall of 2023. But we've been through that.
