They flew our top military brass in to get buy-in for their plan to declare war on American citizens.
There is a lot to unpack from the meeting Donald Trump and Pete Hegseth held this morning with hundreds of generals and admirals in Quantico but the most important is this: the United States government is going to war against American citizens, on American soil.
We are witnessing the authoritarian takeover of the nation by a duly elected president who no longer wants to bother with dissent, protests or even the First Amendment. It will turn into a civil war only if we refuse to submit. Make no mistake: this war was declared today by the president of the United States from a stage at a Virginia marine base, before the top echelon of the United States military.
You wont hear the paper of record ringing this alarm. Once again, The New York Times has missed the boat on how another administration is taking us to war before its very eyes. In its write-up, the Times argued:
There does not seem to be a clear point or purpose in President Trumps address to military generals today. Its a garden variety tear; hes talking about tariffs, Joe Biden and the autopen, the southern border, CNN, his personal feelings about President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia and his anxieties that he wont be given a Nobel Peace Prize he feels he deserves. These are things he talks about almost every day regardless of audience or setting. Every so often he throws in a statistic or observation he has about the military. I think we should maybe start thinking about battleships by the way he said at one point in the middle of a riff about tariffs. I used to watch Victory at Sea. I love Victory at Sea.

(181,969 posts)Much of the presidents speech to military leaders was stale and dull. But then he started talking about using the military against the enemy within.
Much of Trumpâs speech to generals and admirals was stale, boring, and predictable.

But when he turned his attention to the âenemy within,â and started talking about using U.S. cities as military âtraining grounds,â this was a qualitatively different kind of pitch. www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddo...

But making matters far more serious was Trumps pitch on using the U.S. military on American soil. NPR summarized:
President Trump defended the use of U.S. troops in American cities and told top U.S. commanders that the military would be used against the enemy within. ... This is going to be a big thing for the people in this room, because its the enemy from within, and we have to handle it before it gets out of control, Trump told those gathered for the highly unusual event at Quantico, Va. It wont get out of control once youre involved at all.
The ones that are run by the radical left Democrats, what theyve done to San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, theyre very unsafe places. And were going to straighten them out one by one. And this is going to be a major part for some of the people in this room, he told military leaders. Thats a war, too. Its a war from within.
Trump: "The ones that are run by radical left Democrats -- what they've done to San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles. They're very unsafe places & we're gonna straighten them out one by one. This is gonna be a major part for some people in this room. That's a war too. It's war from within"

As part of the same argument, the president said hes told Hegseth that the U.S. should use some of these dangerous cities as training grounds for our military.
Trump: "San Francisco, Chicago, New York, Los Angeles...That's a war too. It's a war from within...I told Pete, we should use some of these cities as training grounds for our military â national guard, but military. We're going into Chicago very soon."

After troop deployments in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., as well as announced deployments to Memphis and Portland, Oregon, many raised concerns about the presidents willingness and apparent eagerness to use military force against Americans. After Trumps speech to generals and admirals, those concerns deserve to be a whole lot louder.
