(32,087 posts)It seems absurd when you first think about it, that these would be the people literally at the front lines, clinging to the last vestiges of democracy. Thats how it works though. Comedians make you think. Cant be having that in the new White Nationalist Paradise.

(2,158 posts)They don't see things as a zero sum game, or vis a vis a scarcity model. They each do their thing, trusting that there is enough pie to go around.
Of course, Meyers is not in direct competition with Kimmel and Colbert, being on at a later time slot. Similar thing with Oliver, who airs on Sundays. But it is still very heartwarming.
Anybody remember the mess with Leno, O'Brien and other late night hosting contenders a generation or so ago?
And yes, the late night landscape is still a boys' club, but when you listen to these guys talk, you can tell they are all possessed of genuine emotional intelligence, even if they are attention-seeking doofuses at heart. (That's why most folks get into comedy, after all.)

(17,764 posts)Just wondering. He certainly evolved into a kind and compassionate guy. I've watched his Netflix interviews and he seems like he could cut trumpie to the quick just as easily as these three do.

(17,764 posts)I love how he just laughed it off about the LOSER comment. I also like how he veered towards the seriousness of "what are we going to do about this".

(53,509 posts)While appearing at The Atlantic Festival on Sept. 18, the former "Late Show" host expressed dismay over ABC's decision to indefinitely pull "Jimmy Kimmel Live!" from the air following pressure from the Federal Communications Commission.
"This is a misery," Letterman said. "In the world of somebody who is an authoritarian, maybe a dictatorship, sooner or later, everyone is going to be touched."
Sharing support for "my good friend" Kimmel, he continued, "I feel bad about this because we all see where this is going, correct? It's managed media. It's no good. It's silly. It's ridiculous. And you can't go around firing somebody because you're fearful or trying to suck up to an authoritarian, criminal administration in the Oval Office. That's just not how this works."
Letterman noted that during his years of hosting late-night shows and regularly criticizing the current presidential administration, "Not once were we squeezed by anyone from any governmental agencies, let alone the dreaded FCC."
"The institution of the president of the United States ought to be bigger than a guy doing a talk show," he said, adding that the situation "would be hilarious if it wasn't all leading to something from which we won't recover."
