Just saw the address to our military . Father and his brother were WW2 combat veterans. I was lucky in that during Nam I was sent to Germany . What I heard today is so incredibly insulting to everyone who has ever served. We need smart capable men and women, not clowns who view serving in the military as a John Wayne movie. We need the very best to support those in combat roles with the highest standards.
They are destroying pride and honor and replacing them with fear and intimidation. We are seeing kakistocracy on steroids.
Dwight Eisenhower is spinning.

I know about Bonhoeffer. I take a moment each day to remember all those who suffered and who suffer because of evil.

On Edit, I am thrilled by the rec's of so many compassionate people, radiant with the light of peace, love and human dignity. A quote:
Peace is not simply the absence of war; it is a state in which people come together in mutual trust and live with joy, energy and hope. This is the polar opposite of war―where people live plagued by hatred and the fear of death.
Another: HATE IS NOT HAPPINESS.

Seen precious Kathy Kelly's article begging the Vatican to pray & help the flotilla.
Read most of Henry Giroux's article & intend to finish reading tonight.

(172 posts)Dietrich Bonhoeffer had a message that calls for Christians to directly confront evil. He could have remained in New York, but returned to Germany to resist the Nazification of the church and soon thereafter to actually become a member of on of the conspiracies to end Hitler's regime. When I had the chance to go there, I felt compelled to visit the place of his execution, at the memorial camp in Flossenbürg.

It's that kind of bravery that moves mountains.

Disheartened? These people never gave up when faced with enormous obstacles.

(1,914 posts)I know a fellow who was a 4-star general. Guess we could call him a Brigadeer General, as he is retired now. And he's still living. Had an Uncle who fought & died (before I was born) in the Battle of Bull Run (hope I remember that battle correctly). Didn't call my friend today, as I felt it was too soon. Will wait for a few days. Thank you for your post and welcome to DU!
