After more than 30 years of service, somebody finally told the Sergeant Major of the Army what the U.S. Armed Forces are

for. What would SMA Michael R. Weimer have done if Secretary of "War" Pet Hegseth hadn't at long last let him know that the purpose of the U.S. Armed Forces, including the U.S. Army, was to defend the United States? Thank goodness to former drunken National Guard officers like Hegseth who are able to clue in the senior military leadership what their job is.

If their purpose is to defend the US, why did Trump and crew rename Department of Defense to Department of War? LonePirate Sep 2025 #2
According to 47, it was those notoriously "woke" people of the late 1940's that changed it to DoD. pat_k Sep 2025 #4

DJT: "...then we decided to go woke, and we changed the name to DOD."

So, they are just correcting that lilly-livered "wokeness."

Key Events:

1947:
The National Security Act was passed, abolishing the Department of War and creating the National Military Establishment, which merged the Army, Navy, and the newly created Air Force under a single civilian-headed department.

1949:
The National Military Establishment was renamed the Department of Defense. This name change was enacted by Congress to reflect the broader duties of the unified department, including national security and foreign policy, as well as to emphasize the goal of preventing war in the emerging nuclear age.

Back in Sept when they announced the lunacy, according to this article:

One former defense official scoffed, “This is purely for domestic political audiences. Not only will this cost millions of dollars, it will have absolutely zero impact on Chinese or Russian calculations. Worse, it will be used by our enemies to portray the United States as warmongering and a threat to international stability.”

Given that the 47 regime has made it crystal that Their MAGA U.S.A. is in fact a warmongering threat to international stability, I guess we're all good!

"We have to be prepared for war, not for defense. We're training warriors, not defenders. We fight wars to win, not to defend. Defense is something you do all the time. It's inherently reactionary and can lead to overuse, overreach and mission creep."

Secretary of War Pete Hegseth
