The Supreme Court's newest decision could make it impossible to end the shutdown

On Friday, the Supreme Court handed down an order that could completely upend the balance of power between Congress and President Donald Trump. The order effectively permits Trump to cancel $4 billion in foreign aid spending that he is required to spend under an act of Congress.

Trump claims the power to “impound” funds, meaning that he will not spend money that has been appropriated by Congress. Until Trump’s second election, legal experts across the political spectrum agreed that impoundment is unconstitutional. Indeed, many doubted whether someone could even make an argument supporting impoundment. As future Chief Justice William Rehnquist wrote in a 1969 Justice Department memo, “it is in our view extremely difficult to formulate a constitutional theory to justify a refusal by the President to comply with a congressional directive to spend.”

The justices, however, appear to have voted entirely on partisan lines in Friday’s decision, in a case called Department of State v. AIDS Vaccine Advocacy Coalition. All three of the Democratic justices dissented, while none of the six Republicans publicly disagreed with the Court’s decision. (The Court did not reveal how each of the Republicans voted, so it is theoretically possible that one of them quietly dissented.)

The Court’s decision, moreover, is wrong. The justices in the majority explained why they voted to let Trump cancel this spending in a single sentence. While they did not actually rule that Trump acted lawfully, they determined that “the Government, at this early stage, has made a sufficient showing that the Impoundment Control Act precludes” this suit, seeking to restore the funds in question, from moving forward.

I recognize a Democrat would never be so petty to challenge spending plans crafted by the House/Senate, but the SC is giving trunt so much power that I can't see this ruling as anything but a handover to republican presidents.

The theft of the Supreme Court super majority and the installation of ideologues who are bought and paid for and do EXACTLY as they are told ended the Judical Branch of government.

The wholesale gerrymandering, constant use of the filibuster by ONE SIDE and not the other, and the disgusting pandering of the Congress along with the weaponization of the Electoral College and expansion of the "unitary executive" theory as essentally ended the Legislative Branch of government.

The susceptibility of the American public to racial dog whistles, fake machismo dressed up as 'toughness', and flat out stupidity led to not one but TWO elections of Donald Trump over vastly better qualified andmore intelligent and capable female candidates (both of which would have been far better for the nation as a whole) and his purging of the guard rails and sanity in the office has essentially ended the Executive Branch of the government.

We are left with a sawed off tree, a camp fire of the former three co-equal branches of government, a MOUNTAIN of debt and a failing ECONOMY, problems that are going to cause the deaths of MILLLIONS of people and our fucking "leaders" sit around the burning campfire singing the same goddamn songs and dancing the same fucking jigs over and over and over. The American experiment is over. The questions going forward are fuckig terrifying for the world and yet no one is doing jack all about it.

The Supreme Court needs to be either rebalanced or replaced or flat out ignored. Trump ignores them...why the fuck do we still abide????

The President needs to be impeached and removed from office and ineligible for any other office EVER. He never should have been elected once, but he never should have been allowed to run again. The fact that history (temporarily anyway) has been rewritten to obsfucate the real events of 6th January 2021 does not mean it was ever OK in the first place. He should be in jail not in office and yet we allow it? We go to work and we pay taxes and we pretend that this is normal, that this is functional, that is repairable if only we get the right coalition of voters?

This nation is dead, but its corpse is the most lethal weapon in the history of humanity left in the hands of a lunatic and his fanatical supporters and their brain washed (or dead?) minions. We need to be seizing the launch codes, shutting down the missile silos and recalling the subs and grounding the planes. We need to be far more worried about this than at any time since October 1962. For fuck's sake, Trump was again alluding to nuclear weapons YESTERDAY!!!!

Or maybe we have just given up...
Maybe its just better to let everything burn down around us, fight through a hellish war that prunes the majority of life on the planet and hope that whatever comes after humanity does a better job next time around in a few hundred million years or so.
