Approximately 70% of Majors will make it to Lt. Colonel and 50% of Lt. Colonels will make it to Colonel.

Most Captains will have completed some sort of advanced schooling before moving on to Major. Without an advanced degree, he would probably be in the bottom 30% when being reviewed for promotion.
