Pope Leo's critique of Trump ends honeymoon with conservative Catholics

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) -Pope Leo initially impressed conservative Catholics after his election in May as he embraced traditions shunned by his predecessor Pope Francis and steered clear of hot button social issues that divided the 1.4 billion-member Church.

But his honeymoon with conservatives appears over after he unexpectedly took aim at U.S. President Donald Trump's hard-line immigration policies, questioning whether they were in line with the Church's pro-life teachings.

"Someone who says I am against abortion but I am in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don't know if that's pro-life," Leo, the first U.S. pope, told reporters on Tuesday.

Some critics, who had praised the pope for his early reserve, expressed shock that Leo criticized the current champion of global conservatives.

I'm not a Catholic, so my dog in this fight is kinda small, but...

"Someone who says I am against abortion but I am in agreement with the inhuman treatment of immigrants in the United States, I don't know if that's pro-life," Leo, the first U.S. pope, told reporters on Tuesday.

Not exactley calling for excommunication there, is he?

I guess any slight of trump must be met with maximum pushback.

religious conservatives are in him actually BEING their god.

They certainly aren't following those Jesus parts of the Bible.

And don't get thrown around that often.

In the 21st Century, deviance from doctrine or church position will usually not merit such an action, except perhaps from a radical few in the hierarchy.

Rather, the disapproval will be duly noted and that's it.

It's the same why the push to refuse communion to Catholic politicians such as Joe Biden or John Kerry over the issue of abortion was rejected by most in Catholic leadership.

Basically, it cuts both ways.

Roman Catholics who put cash and power ahead of the message of love and service are in for a real surprise.

"Abortion should be safe, legal and rare".

The term "pro-life" is inaccurately used, by Pope Leo and by the Trump cult. I don't know ANYONE who isn't pro-life in the plain English dictionary meaning of the word.

in that real "pro-life" believers should extend their concern beyond the womb and act more pro-life toward actual living persons who have grown up or who have at least left the birth canal successfully.

Currently, American pro-lifers don't do that well at all.
