Bondi firing Florida federal prosecutor for Trump comments could upend big Medicare fraud trial

Prosecutors have asked for a delay and may drop the case if they don’t get one.

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi fired a federal prosecutor in Miami last week because he had posted critical blog commentary about Donald Trump during his first term as president — a politically fraught decision that is threatening an upcoming trial.

Bondi’s firing of Will Rosenzweig might upend the trial of two Medicare fraud defendants set to start on Monday because he was the lead prosecutor in the case and the U.S. Attorney’s Office says it’s not prepared to proceed without him. A fellow prosecutor involved in the case has asked a federal judge to delay the start of the trial until early November, and if he doesn’t grant his request, the U.S. Attorney’s Office is considering dropping the healthcare fraud and conspiracy charges against them.

Normally, when federal prosecutors weigh whether to dismiss an indictment before trial, it’s for lack of evidence — not for lack of a prosecutor to try the case — underscoring perhaps the unintended consequences of Bondi’s firing of Rosenzweig on Sept. 23 while he was observing the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, with his family.

A key hearing on the Medicare fraud trial is set for Friday afternoon in Miami federal court.

In a court filing on Thursday, Assistant U.S. Attorney David Turken told U.S. District Judge Donald Graham that if he “denies this motion” for a delay, the prosecutor “may recommend dismissal” of the indictment against the two defendants “if his current schedule for trial remains unchanged.”

Why don’t we just send all our Medicare contributions straight to Florida. So if GQP gets to kill Medicare, how many Republican millionaires go broke from lack of scamming ops?
