Coffee prices triple, putting pressure on roasters, cafes, customers

The price of green coffee beans has nearly tripled in recent years and coffee roasters in Eugene are feeling the pain. They can absorb only so much of the cost increase before passing it along to customers to keep their businesses percolating.

“I’ve been in this business for 21 years, and I’ve never seen it like this,” said Eric Pierce, owner of Caffé Pacori.

Before the pandemic, Pierce said it was common for roasters to pay less than $2 per pound for green coffee beans from Brazil. Now, it’s common to pay nearly $7 per pound for the same beans, and that’s before factoring in new 50% tariffs on Brazilian imports, which took effect in August.

Prices for green beans jumped, starting in 2021, due to a combination of factors. Extreme weather in Brazil caused crop loss. Remnants of supply chain disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic contributed, as did a shipping barge getting stuck in the Suez Canal. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 contributed to a spike in oil prices.

Okon Udosenata of Equiano Coffee Roasters in Eugene said that before December 2024, coffee warehouses in major ports like Seattle, Portland and the Bay Area always maintained a surplus of beans.

1. The coffee I drink is still the same price at Costco

That's probably because it comes from Central America, ethically sourced from local farmers. It's MAYORGA and it comes in medium and dark roast. I prefer the dark roast. It's always been a little pricey, but since I'm the only one drinking it, who cares? It's the best coffee out there! I introduced my brother and SIL to it (they love in Montana, no Costco there) and now she orders it online!

I see two types of "Dark Roast" and one "Muy Dark Roast".

5. The regular "Dark Roast"

It's what I've been drinking ever since it hit the shelves at Costco. I buy the whole bean and grind it fresh as I use it. Nothing better! (And I have drunk a LOT of coffee in my life, since I'm 82 and started drinking it regularly at 14)

2. I know storing package ground coffee (or even beans) is not preferable if you are a discerning coffee drinker, BUT

-several online outlets (besides Amazon) are using this October PRIME sale as a reason to offer packaged coffee at a "more reasonable' price. A coffee I've long liked from the New England company had gone from about $6 per 11-ounce package to nearly $12. My response was to stock up on tea, which is also seeing price rises. But, I just saw one of the online sources drop it back down for a short-term price close to what I once paid, so I bought the maximum allowed (12 packages). So, whether or not it goes stale, I will add an additional vacuum pack to each half dozen packages and store them in my cool pantry to ensure as much freshness as possible. And when it goes back up beyond $12 for 11 measly ounces, I will think it tastes great.

8. I don't think that vacuum pack goes bad

if stored in a cool dark place. I usually buy mine on sale at Costco (price might be $13.95 instead of $15.95) and get a couple of bags at a time, store them on the bottom shelf of my pantry cupboard. But I buy whole bean and grind it fresh every time.

7. Something that has puzzled me is the price of gas is pretty steady

Well everything is skyrocketed otherwise. Is Drumph
somehow manipulating the gas prices to keep his supporters to think it's not that bad.

works for blue bottle coffee, a popular chain of cafes in nyc. they r looking to expand in chgo, and she will b coming here to set up. if this stalls that plan, i will b white hot pissed.

13. Growing up in the 80s coffee was strictly an adult beverage.

Today, we have 9-year-olds who drink it in various forms. Add an ever-expanding adult population of coffee drinkers and climate change, and it's no wonder it's so expensive. Glad I never picked up the habit, though I do enjoy it on occasion. That's usually when I'm on vacation.
