These two vets said on their podcast that the US is becoming a dictatorship but that the military won't stand for it. Thoughts? Made me hopeful but I feel like everyone is just rolling over to the admin, don't see why military would be any different?

(7,026 posts)I think the best we can hope for is that the military refuses to follow unlawful orders. This is within each military member's duty.

fair, maybe we can't depend on them but do you think they'll actively turn on the American people?

(7,026 posts)I don't want the military to use their power for either the purpose of propping up Trump or deposing Trump. I do expect them to push back against unlawful and unwise orders and actions.

(6,623 posts)I have no idea what his political leanings are. If being a loyal American means being a liberal these days, then I guess he is.

(15,595 posts)If there's no election, despite there being elections during all the Wars there have been during the time there's been a United States of America, then our Democratic Republic is officially on life support starting to flatline.
I'm trying not to be flip or hair on fire, but a lot of officers are not happy and are starting to choose their words very carefully.
Y'see, most of them understand what it takes to be an officer in a corrupt government; a lot have worked with those types of officers, and there's all sorts of studies about what happens to officers who care about successful missions, or their troops, or even "saving taxpayer dollars and optimizing resources" - because in a corrupt or idealistically authoritarian government - the Kleptocracies, the Theocracies, the Oligarchies, the Dictatorships - the only mission is to protect the ones in power. The Military becomes the Mercenary.
Citizens, the average Soldiers and Sailors, hell, any concept of civilized society be damned.
Once we have no more elections, the Military leadership will have to make their choice.
Along with the States.

Very very few soldiers and officers will have the capability and discernment to disobey direct orders.
