SF Chronicle opinion piece: Katie Porter's cringey viral flub just made the California governor's race a lot more...

...interesting:

...a viral clip began circulating of the race’s Democratic front-runner, former Rep. Katie Porter, crashing out and threatening to leave what should have been a routine TV interview.

But there’s no question that in this interview, Porter made amateur, cringey mistakes, which is surprising given her track record of grilling CEOs testifying before Congress while brandishing a whiteboard that generated viral videos.

She took Watts’ questions too literally, seemed to smugly suggest she didn’t need to work for the votes of Republicans or independents because she had the race in the bag and appeared offended by Watts doing her job.

Other candidates faced similarly worded questions from Watts and responded with equilibrium.

She doesn’t seem to realize that the vibe that made her popular among the base as a representative doesn’t play as well when running against other democrats

I'm not sure how this will affect the race.

But she was in a position where if she could get to election day without any major issue or mistake she was likely to win.

and wouldn’t let it go. Of course, Porter could have handled it better.

I wouldn’t be surprised if Watts was “encouraged” to go after Porter.

And yes, Porter should have been better prepared,
