He's a Democrat who's positioned himself in his race as a fighter against the "billionaire class" and the political "oligarchy".
He has also stated that his goal is to build an "organized working class power" in Maine.
Within the first nine days of his campaign, Platner raised $1 million, mostly from small-dollar donations. By late September 2025, his campaign had raised $3.2 million.
He got an endorsement from U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, which means a lot to most non-Democrats in Maine.

* Platner's empathy, understanding and ability to connect
* Mamdani's conviction that the billionaire-driven status quo must change
* Newsom's and Pritzker's courage to stand straight up to Trump

This is what we need. No, we probably would not have an effective party if everyone was their own leader in their own way. But we must replace the generations of people comfortable in the status quo with people who really will fight hard and effectively for the right things.

And we should not fail to recognize that some of the barriers to progress (and attacks on these people) are coming from within our own house.

In Maine, a brewery owner and an oyster farmer hope to upend the establishment and oust Susan Collins from the Senate

snip***

Mills, who is term-limited, has said she is “seriously considering” running for Senate and signaled she intends to make a decision by November. Collins has said she plans to run but hasn’t officially launched her campaign. The incumbent didn’t announce her 2020 re-election bid until December 2019.

More than half a dozen Democrats have entered the race to unseat Collins, including Dan Kleban, the co-founder of Maine Beer Company; Graham Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer; and Jordan Wood, who served as a chief of staff to former Rep. Katie Porter.
