Incidentally, the flight wasn’t canceled. His family’s reservations were canceled. But I’m sure it’s just a koinky dink.

Certainly not the majority but a fair number of people seem very eager to dismiss this. I have no idea what happened. But it’s a very odd coincidence. Generally speaking there are 3 parties that have access to airline reservations. The airline, the government and the passenger. It sure doesn’t seem like he canceled the flight so that eliminates one possibility.

there isn't a nefarious explanation behind it all, who knows, but this has happened to me more than several times. They call it getting "bumped". Those jerks overbook flights and count on a certain percentage of people not showing up. If everyone does show up, someone has to get bounced. The tickets are paired with the purchase and they will treat it as a party, so if there are two people and only one seat left, both will get bumped. It really should be illegal, it's highly inconvenient when it happens.
