VA-GOV: Candidates in Virginia governor's debate clash over shutdown and violent rhetoric

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Virginia gubernatorial candidates Republican Winsome Earle-Sears and Democrat Abigail Spanberger faced off Thursday for the first and only time on the debate stage in a fiery affair that was combative from the very first answer.

Earle-Sears, perceived by operatives in both parties to be trailing, went on the offensive throughout the hourlong clash, interrupting almost every one of Spanberger’s answers and referring to the congresswoman only by her first name.

Spanberger, who largely avoided addressing her Republican opponent directly, set a more sterile and bipartisan tone. The personal clashes overshadowed the policy fights at times, which focused on violent rhetoric, the federal shutdown and transgender children. The economy was an afterthought.

Here are some takeaways from the debate at Norfolk State University:

Consider Sears running against her democrat opponent on 'moral' grounds.

Be sure to point out her own party stalwart who would consider a pardon for a convicted sex trafficker.

By her own party's standards, Winsome Earle-Sears is super DEI.

Female
Black
Immigrant.

…. Especially if you start prevent defence too early.

Winsome Sears was mimicking Lawrence Taylor…. And Abigail Sandberger was tossing the ball out of bounds, trying to prevent a sack.

I wish Sandberger had been a bit more decisive/angressive with answers. She should’ve said no we’re not gonna cooperate with ICE on a general round up; instead she left the door open for her to cooperate with ICE on a general roundup…. That was a bit like shanking a punt

Spanberger’s TV ads re Earle-Sears have been brutal. They portray her as a screaming banshee (‘I’m speaking!!!’) and a Trump toady. As far as I can tell, the only thing Earle-Sears is really known for is her anti-trans bathroom stand, piggybacking off Governor Youngkin’s success with that issue. Earle-Sears obnoxious debate style may appeal to the MAGAts, but it won’t go over well with sane voters, who still dominate in Virginia. The only way I can see Earle-Sears winning is if the Republicans massively cheat - which they are fully capable of doing.

A.S. did NOTHING to hurt herself and Sears came off like the nutty wench that she is. A.S. is leading by 8-10 pts depending on the poll. We can sweep VA
