Trump Says Hamas Will Be Disarmed
"Notably, one country that isn’t sending a high-level representative to the Egypt summit is Iran -- one of Hamas’s main supporters.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said Egypt invited him but he couldn’t engage with people (ie the US and Israel) who have attacked and sanctioned Iran. Even so, Iran “welcomes any initiative” that ends the war in Gaza, he said.
Trump in his remarks praised his own decision in June to fly seven “of those beautiful B-2 bombers” to drop bunker-busting missiles on key nuclear sites in Iran, as well as Israel’s targeted killing of Iranian nuclear scientists and military commanders during its 12-day war with the Islamic Republic. He said that destroying Iran’s capability to develop a nuclear weapon -- something Tehran has repeatedly denied it wants to pursue -- was a pre-requisite for the rest of the Muslim and Arab world backing the Gaza ceasefire deal.
“They took a big hit didn’t they. Boy oh boy,” Trump said, referring to the strikes on Iran. Still, he raised the prospect of a peace deal with Iran, asking his audience in the Knesset “you know what would be great, if we could make a peace deal with them, would you be happy with that?” He followed the thought by saying that brokering peace between Russia and Ukraine would take priority.
