Because I've seen no hint of a structured settlement both sides could live with.

(23,868 posts)Trump and Netanyahu think that land belongs to them now, they aren't going to stop just because the hostages were returned.

(3,048 posts)anyone is under any delusions that include Hamas being peaceful.
This is the same repeating cycle that has been going on for decades. They attack Israel, kill a bunch of people, Israel pounds them into dust, they claim to want peace, Israel agrees, then they use the time to re-stock their ammunition and weapons. Then they do it again, and again, and again.
Israel is naive by falling for this yet again

(129,789 posts)Yes, there's an agreement for a ceasefire, and the release of hostages and prisoners. But almost everything else appears to have been pushed out to be dealt with later - from the date of a full Israeli withdrawal, to who will govern Gaza afterwards, to an implausible "pathway to Palestinian statehood". The last ceasefire between Israel and Hamas fell apart in March, when a second round of negotiations that were supposed to finalise a peace agreement never got underway. This deal is supposedly far more comprehensive. However, some elements directly contradict Israel's "red-line" positions.
All of which means there is any number of ways this could all fall over - perhaps within days.
*Hamas may not disarm.
*The details of Israel's withdrawal are extremely vague.
*No consensus on Gaza authority. Gaza is to be governed by a temporary committee of Palestinians and international experts to deliver day-to-day public services, overseen by a Board of Peace chaired by Trump - until control can be handed over to a reformed Palestinian Authority.
That's not going to happen, according to Netanyahu - and possibly, also according to Hamas.

(115,286 posts)Where was Trump the last two years as the place was being destroyed, with people dying and children starving?
In my opinion, they have found a couple of stooges that they can say are "Hamas leaders" and declare that they have a "peace plan". The real leaders of Hamas will be looking for revenge.
This is all a sham created by Trump and Netanyahu, in my opinion. It will permit Bibi to save face.

(150,905 posts)That part of the world has a very, very long history. Actually, the longest history we know of. Several thousand years of history, and almost all of it involves tribal fighting and wars of some kind. The Middle East reflects the human tendency to distrust and even hate those who are not part of our own clan.
So, I doubt it's going to last long.
