(55,301 posts)That's what I've done for the 33 protests I've attended in San Diego. You get more bang for your buck!
I use a 3/4" diameter dowel so I can twirl it easily. I also a use white foam core board as the base to glue/tape my signs to. It is light but study and it has lasted all 33 times and has many more protests left in it.
My signs are heavy duty as far as sturdy goes and they can withstand winds and they are not heavy in weight.
Since I am a trained illustrator my designs are professional looking and I reuse them, sort of cut and paste.
Also I am only 5'1 1/2" tall and 84 pounds so I need a sign I can carry without getting tired or blown over.
In San Diego the June 14 NO KINGS had 80,000 protester as 2 marches within q mile merged into one huge protest.
On Oct 18th, there are 3 protests within 1 mile of each other.
I have had 3 signs ready for Oct 18th since it was announced in Sept. I lend them to friends/family if they ask nicely.
Also, from now on I only will go alone. I have gone with others to half of the protests over the years and I prefer going alone. Other people think of it as a social gathering and a photo op for their signs. Not me!!!!!
When I protest I MUST be at the front (so I can hear the megaphones and chants). Also, I walk super fast and weave in and out of the crowds so I can be at the front. If anyone wants to take a photo of me or interview me (this happens often) they can do it before the march while I am standing at the stage, listening to the various speakers.
This is a protest and I take it very seriously. I am passionate and I want to be seen and heard as an American citizen, DAMN IT!!!!!

(9,019 posts)We have used broom handles that screw out of the broom heads for many signs, but I really had to leave a couple of my many brooms operational, so new signs are different.
My daughter does costumes and so she becomes her message. Shoulda seen her as the 'money man' from the game Monopoly! Stick on mustache, rubber cigar, white hair, big $ sign necklace, and 2 canvas drawstring bags with $ signs painted on and lots of Monopoly money pouring out the tops. She did it right down to black suit, $ sign gold cuff-links on her white tux shirt, topped it off with a top hat... of course.

(15,710 posts)I have two 20"x30" sheets of corrugated plastic, and each has a sign front & rear. I can only display 2 signs at the same time, but can flip each around.
I use the round wooden extensions for painting ceilings with a roller, which means I can make it tall then unscrew them into small sections for easy transport. The signs are held to this pole with bolts & nuts that go thru holes drilled thru the signs & poles top & bottom.

(15,710 posts)The link below has 4 of my latest signs. I can't take credit for the Putin line drawing (which I found in a political cartoon) but the rest is all my doing.

(55,301 posts)It sounds odd but it is easier and more time efficient for me if I sketch an idea then make a full size poster sized sign freehand.
I'd send you images but I am a tech moron and can never figure out how to do it in under 30 minutes.
NO KINGS Oct 18th is going to be enormous. I signed up on Sept 6th, when it was announced. Currently there are THREE separate protests planned with 1 mile of each other in San Diego. The June 14th event had 2 huge protests. I am trying to decide what time to head downtown since parking will be crazy. Somehow I was able to get a spot, walk to the protest and then drive home without any issues with parking. It took my sister over 45 minutes to get home (she was with her friends and we didn't attend together). I think the "activist gods" are smiling on me.

(15,710 posts)Unfortunately, I'm leaving this Friday with my wife and two dogs for a long planned vacation rental in Michigan's Upper Peninsula for fall colors and waterfalls. There is a No Kings event in the nearby town of Marquette, but my wife (aligned with me politically) would not be happy if I left her for 3 hours to attend a protest during our first full day on vacation.

(55,301 posts)However, see if you can convince her to go on Sat. Tell her it is going to be the largest US protest EVER and it will be in the history books. Than could make her a little more willing to make history WHILE on vacation.

(55,301 posts)but I'm a true tech moron and can never figure out how to do it. I tried and tried over the years but I'm hopeless. Sometimes I can post my sign via YouTube when my signs and I have been on the local news.

I hope this shows the actual images and not just the link to them. I followed the instructions for posting images but in the preview I just see the link.
