Nebraska soybean farmers are staring down the barrel of a trade war with the number one market for American soybeans: China.
The farmers Ive met are patriotic Americans. Most are willing to keep doing a tough and important job to ensure that, long-term, America is more competitive. But many of the farmers Ive spoken to recently share my concern of the U.S. rewarding a competitor for Chinese markets, Argentina, with a $20 billion bailout with taxpayer money.
We may be the Cornhusker State, but soybeans are our number two cash crop its a huge and important business for us. The industry nationally sends more than half of our crop to China. But China hasnt bought a bushel of American soy since May in response to tariffs on their products. Now, harvest season is here, but without our top market, our soybean farmers are left holding the bag.
China still has an appetite for the crop and they have looked elsewhere for a new supplier. Argentina also has a large soybean sector, but historically has applied an export tax which made their beans more expensive. Seeing a potential customer, they temporarily dropped the tax, providing another incentive to the Chinese to buy from them. China, seeing a good deal, bought 7 million metric tons of Argentinian soybeans in only 48 hours.
