there is documented evidence that British officers at Fort Pitt intentionally gave smallpox-infected blankets to Native Americans during Pontiac's Rebellion in 1763. A military commander, Colonel Henry Bouquet, ordered the distribution of blankets and a handkerchief from the smallpox hospital, and his superior, Lord Jeffrey Amherst, approved of using smallpox as a weapon.
