Hale, Michigan is a little literal one stoplight town, at the lonely stoplight there will be a NO KINGS protest this Saturday. This town is so red I wore a new white t-shirt the other day and came home wearing pink
.ok, thats a lie, but you get the idea.
We were going to go into the big city of East Tawas for that protest but decided to make noise and dance in our home town. The protest is at the town gazebo located
guess where
at the stoplight. 12 to 2pm..
We will get together at 10am that morning at the Lutheran church back in the garage to make signs and get stuff together.
Its going to be an eye opening event. Little red town showing resistance.

(19,876 posts)We were thinking of going to Iowa City or Cedar Rapids or even Des Moines for one of the bigger protests this time, but we're going to go to our very red county seat and protest at the courthouse on Saturday,. because they need to know we are here, in our small, very red, county.
We need to show up, to let people who may agree, but think they are alone know that we are there, that we exist.

(3,709 posts)I was in Michigan last week, visiting for the first time. We stayed in Saginaw, where my husband grew up. We took a long drive one day along Lake Huron and drove through Tawas and environs. Leaves were starting to turn. Michigan is so beautiful!!

(7,026 posts)It might have taken folks there a while to see how much damage trump and the repubs are doing. Having lived UpNorth years ago, I saw a lot of folks who were, sad to say, racist. I hope you are seeing the change in folks up there that I wish I had seen. I'll be in Wyandotte MI on Saturday.

(103,809 posts)And furthermore, the little red town I've been hanging in all summer is having one too! I was going to go to a city but there's one right down the street!
This feels really different.

(13,165 posts)Funny thing happened
my wife was on our local FB group asking exactly what time and where..if it was established yet. Well some of the the responses were downright nasty
.BUT
.as it turned out asking a simple question getting those responses drove more traffic to the group. Many apologized for others behavior but also there were some thanking her because they had no idea a protest was in town.
We will see how it goes.

Im betting as the days drag on, our numbers will only grow. Trump will inevitably grow more confident and gutsy. And thats where the weakness is.

(13,165 posts)Last protest we were in East Tawas
demo puts the area leaning more toward seniors. That was reflected in the attendance, but it was mixed. I think the younger people have different ways to protest than the in person type.

(29 posts)I just drove south to Detroit today from my in-laws property on the west shoreline of Houghton Lake. Theyve had rental cabins on the lake since 1949. Ill be at a No Kings event in Detroit this weekend. Have a good time up there in Northern Michigan!
P.S. its interesting, isnt it, that we here in Michigan call anything north of Saginaw in the Lower Peninsula, Northern Michigan. But in fact, we do have a northern Northern Michigan, called the Upper Peninsula.
My mothers family are Finnlanders who lived east of Marquette. My sister now owns the former family cottage in Eagle Harbor.
You run out of Michigan up there!

(13,165 posts)Well really the trip was to the Harbor Freight store in Houghton

Have a great time in the flatlands as we call the area south of Saginaw.

(23 posts)I know the town, my sis has a cottage up there. This is good news. And to add, Whitmore Lake (another small red town in Michigan) will be protesting as well!

(13,165 posts)Hale is about 15 miles inland from the lake. Home of the Michigan Mud Jam.
Whitmore Lake is close to where my daughter lives.
