Chincoteague/Assateague National parks - open, free, but not staffed.

Facilities closed.

We were able to drive in but none of the visitors centers are open.

There are two parks in one. Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge and Assateague Island National Seashore.

Our first trip in, the park ranger manned gates were empty. After lunch we went back to hike (200 yards) to the lighthouse. On the second trip there was a woman in the front booth. There was still no charge but she had maps.
I asked if she was here on her own. She said they just weren't being paid now. Before I could stop the words coming out, I said “but you will be paid”
She shrugged and said, “We’ll see”
I nodded and said knew what she meant and thanked her for being there.

Lots of people were there. Walkers bikes etc. quite a few people at the beach (Assateague). On the return trip we got as close a shot of one of the wild horses as you are going to get.

Checking the catalog my wife bought my daughter from last year, this appears to be Beach Boy - a direct descendant of Misty.
This is from the road separated by a small marsh.

But it’s October so….

I got a local tip on where they keep the baby horses that are here on Chincoteague. My daughter is loving this.

Kick in to the DU tip jar?
