Axios - Scoop: Dems plot Fetterman ouster

Top Democrats in Pennsylvania are maneuvering to run against Sen. John Fetterman in a 2028 primary contest, threatening to tear the party apart in the biggest battleground state in the nation.

Why it matters: Democrats haven't flipped a GOP Senate seat since Fetterman did it in 2022. He's still popular with Pennsylvania voters, even as Democrats turn on him over his softened approach to President Trump.

- Potential Democratic challengers are already bashing Fetterman — and each other — years ahead of schedule.
- Some Democratic officials are openly contemplating running against Fetterman or keeping the door open to a Senate bid in the event he retires.

The big picture: Democrats who could run against Fetterman include Reps. Brendan Boyle and Chris Deluzio and former Rep. Conor Lamb, according to multiple political insiders in Pennsylvania.

1️⃣ Boyle has been loudly critical of Fetterman on TV and social media, calling him "Trump's favorite Democrat" and accusing him of visiting the president at Mar-a-Lago to "kiss the ring."
2️⃣ Deluzio has been cultivating a national brand as a young populist leader from the Rust Belt.
3️⃣ Lamb has won the praise of progressives like Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-N.Y.) for repeatedly attacking Fetterman, who beat Lamb in the 2022 Democratic primary.

3. I am quite certain he would survive a primary if held today.

He's still very popular in PA.

I also think booting him would be a mistake. He appeals to independents, and would easily be re-elected in a state that is drifting red.

4. His approval rating is afloat because of Republicans that are happy with him.

He's well underwater with Dems in the state, as evidenced by his 33/54 approval/disapproval rating amongst Dems in the state.

I hear what you're saying, but there's nothing to suggest he would survive a primary right now. Being -21 approval among your voters in your state is basically a death knell.

So I might be wrong, I didn't think he was underwater by that much.

I still think booting him has a huge risk of sending the seat to the Pubs. We had a 1.2 million voter advantage in registration in 2010 in Pa. It's down to only 50k, and that will likely be gone in the next year at the current rate of loss.

I say we all get behind the best candidate, no matter our state, and make calls on behalf of the best challenger.

The sooner we're rid of Fetterman and install a for-real Democrat in his place, the better.

big double-party donor talking. The same people who have been getting republicans elected, have been donating to democrats that have led us in a more and more conservative direction. We can take their money, but we need to put some candidates in that will show who our party really represents, which is what the vast majority of Americans want from government.

If we expect to get real benefits from our tax dollars...the trillions of dollars we all pay in taxes...the republicans call it "socialism". I call it unity, to bring the country under a protective umbrella that doesn't just include bombs and tax breaks for the uber rich.
