The values held and methods preferred by MAGA America are the modern manifestation of what was allowed to simmer south of the Mason-Dixon Line after the hasty halt to Reconstruction. The racism, indifference to oligarchy, class structure and exploitation, xenophobia, anti-intellectualism, fondness for authoritarian systems, reverence for nostalgic myth, performative religiosity, and misogyny that bloomed into the Lost Cause are major elements in MAGA loyalty and the rise of its power. As notable historians have explained, the U.S. failed to adequately punish those traitors and it resulted in the spread of their philosophy across the nation as it grew.
The resultant election of Donald Trump -- an obvious backlash to President Barack Obama -- was the boiling over of 100-plus years of a perverse and cruel camp thriving among our populace. Without the Lost Cause, Project 2025 would have held only a fraction of its power.
This new monument is to be placed between Robert E. Lee's mansion and the Lincoln Memorial and will dominate the Ol' Railsplitter's physical symbol on the National Mall. It will serve as the triumphal arch one must pass to cross the Potomac and enter the former Confederacy.
