The president went on a tirade against Iowas Chuck Grassley over the decades-old tradition.President Donald Trump has lashed out at Iowa Sen. Chuck Grassley over his support for a longstanding Senate tradition that allows home-state senators to block judicial nominees.
The 79-year-old president raged on Truth Social against Senate Judiciary Chair Grassley, 92, over the so-called blue slip custom, which Trump called old and ridiculous and claimed was being unfairly used and abused by Democrats.
I have eight GREAT U.S. Attorneys, Highly Respected ALL, who will not be confirmed for their positions in various Highly Consequential States only because theyre Republicans, and the Democrats have convinced Chuck Grassley to honor the stupid and outdated Blue Slip tradition, which precludes very talented and dedicated people from attaining High Office, Trump wrote.
The Democrats violate this practice in order to get people in, but Republicans just dont. These GREAT peoples careers have been badly hurt by the Radical Left Democrats, using an old and ridiculous custom strictly to their advantage. What a shame!

What are the odds that Grassley will fold because of Trump's bullying?

(53,214 posts)What on earth can Trump do to him? Surely there must be an age where a person can say "Screw this, I won't be intimidated by a con artist". Grassley has been Iowa's senator for 44 years. Retiring doesn't seem too farfetched a proposition.

And it's not just because I'm not as quick as I used to be. It's become more apparent lately that successive generations have somewhat different priorities, even if their values are the very close. This needs to be valued in the daily lives of most of the country.
Hell, I'm surprised Johnson didn't try to offer Laurence Welk for the next Superbowl halftime. (I know he's dead. But Johnson would love an AI hologram of the band leader and accordionist.)

(44,738 posts)Trump just wants to appoint honorable judges to positions of honor to advance his honorable agenda. What the hell is wrong with the fossil from Iowa?

(19,704 posts)he is horrible in most ways, but he clings to tradition.
Blue Slips are a tradition.
I wouldn't be shocked if he folds, but I also have a tiny gleam of hope that he won't out of pure old man stubbornness.

He just whimpered his way out of condemning money for Argentina.

(22,590 posts)In addition to old man stubbornness, he has less reason to fear Trump's wrath than many of the others. He's not up for reelection until 2028, and that's if he decides to run again. At his age, he might be thinking about retirement.
At any rate, I'm sure Grassley knew full well that Schlump was going to react badly to his blocking those nominees, and he decided to do it anyway. To me, that's an indication that he may mean business. At least I hope so, for more reasons than one.

(22,590 posts)I already posted that I'm not convinced he'll fold, and this confirms for me that he won't. Especially considering the support he has from other Republicans in the Senate:
Why youre picking a fight you cant win is really beyond most of our comprehension, one Senate Republican told The Hill.

(9,068 posts)If he lives that long, he'll be making his decision to run based on health, not Trump's attacks.
By 2028, Trump's power will be fading since he won't be able to run again, regardless of what he thinks. And, his thinking may very well have deteriorated to the point where he's essentially non-functional by then.
So, Trump can't hurt Grassley politically.
I'm going with Grassley not caving into Trump's demands.
