After Charlie Kirk was assassinated in September while addressing an audience on the campus of Utah Valley University, President Trump made his widow, Erika Kirk, a promise. He would award the conservative grassroots activist the presidential medal of freedom (the highest civilian award of the United States) on what would have been Kirks 32nd birthday on Tuesday. To honour that pledge, the US president found himself rushing from the Middle East, where he signed his new Gaza peace deal, to the Rose Garden of the White House.
Speaking at the event on Tuesday, the president said he had considered telling Kirks widow they would be best to push it back a few days. However, he thought twice: I raced back halfway around the globe. I was going to call Erika and ask, Could you maybe move it to Friday? but I didnt have the courage to call But you know why I didnt call? Because I heard today was Charlies birthday. The ceremony was Kirks widows first public appearance since she gave a speech at her husbands funeral in their home state of Arizona last month.

Then, the 36-year-old mother of two drew praise and some astonishment when she announced that she forgave her husbands killer. Referring to the suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, she said: My husband, Charlie, he wanted to save young men, just like the one who took his life I forgive him because it is what Christ did. The answer to hate is not hate.
The comments struck a markedly different tone to the presidents, who later on stage declared: I hate my opponents and I dont want the best for them, adding: Im sorry, Erika. In a sign of how her faith is driving her forgiveness, Kirk told The New York Times (when asked whether Robinson should face the death penalty): Ill be honest. I told our lawyer, I want the government to decide this. I do not want that mans blood on my ledger. Because when I get to Heaven, and Jesus is like: Uh, eye for an eye? Is that how we do it? And that keeps me from being in Heaven, from being with Charlie?

She is unlikely to appeal to those types. And they will go after her when she starts dating again.
