The directive from former Superintendent Ryan Walters had drawn criticism from civil rights groups and prompted a lawsuit. Walters resigned from his post in September.
On Wednesday, attorneys for the plaintiffs in the case applauded the decision by the new superintendent, Lindel Fields, writing that "the attempts to promote religion in the classroom and the abuses of power should never happen in Oklahoma or anywhere in the United States again."

(41,936 posts)... should be willing to pay for private religious classes. Support private religious education! That's what Catholics have been doing for over 100 years, as well as other groups. There's no reason for public tax-supported schools to be preaching religion to children.

(24,096 posts)And only the rich folks will be able to use these vouchers. Working class families don't have the extra cash needed to place their children in charter schools --- and those schools don't want those types of kids.

(41,936 posts)Vouchers take taxpayer funds out of the public education budget. I don't want my tax money supporting private religious education that I don't believe in. My taxes are paid to support public education and that's it. My kids and all my neighbors' kids get public education, because we're all paying our taxes to support it.
What you are talking about is a scheme to get private religious schools paid for by public tax moneys, and that's undemocratic. Churches (and private schools) need to figure out how they can afford to give religious instruction to their children without taking money from the public education funds.
Catholic families aren't wealthy, and yet many of them choose to send their children to Catholic schools. My parents raised a family of 9 children and all of us had Catholic school education until 9th grade, and then we transferred to public high school.

(7,828 posts)those Catholic students can get a very well-rounded religious education. My sister has taught in the same Catholic Elementary school in a predominantly Mexican American part of the city for her entire career... she even did her student teaching there before being hired as a permanent. She has made it a point each each to introduce her students to other religions... not just other sects of Christianity, but also Buddhism, Hinduism, and she even had me write up a curriculum on Wicca to present, this among other world religions. Her kids have always been well-rounded in their education and unfailingly polite. And the questions they had for me on Wicca were thoughtful, and showed a good degree of critical thinking.
But she and I both agree... "public vouchers" have no place in today's education environment. Her families scrimp and save to put the kids in school. They don't get vouchers. In fact, in recent years the only students who've presented vouchers have been the public school rejects - those thrown out for disciplinary and behavior problems... including robbery, assault, and murder. The last few years have been down right scary for her, as far as I'm concerned.
