Trump is going through with his see what a tough dictator I am vanity parade after all. It seems such a stupid, useless display of ego that I didnt think it would happen. Wrong again
A friend has bicycled in to Trestles beach and captured this photo of one of the four big warships in view a few minutes ago. He also reports I-5 is a parking lot filled with pissed off motorists.

(945 posts)I can see out of my living room a flight of 3 USMC CH-53 Super Sea Stallion helicopters flying from south to north at about 300 ft above the sea. Wasting taxpayer dollars.

(1,410 posts)What is uncommon is shooting live ammo over the I5.
If we had a functioning Govt., this alone is an impeachable offense.

(1,410 posts)Navy ships are offshore quite often in this area. Pendleton is a huge base. What doesn't occur is ships sending Sea to Land live ammo.

(6,108 posts)Orange Couny and LA quite often when I was working. As stated above, it is not unusual to see large warships and hovercraft off shore in the Camp Pendleton area. Also not unusual to see helicopters and units training right beside I5 and the ocean. The unusual thing is live ordinance fire from ship to shore. I've never seen that happen and IT SHOULD NEVER HAPPEN!

(1,410 posts)There seems to basic reading comprehension by some.
Military activities along this stretch of the I5 are almost a daily occcurance.
Using live Ammo is not.
To the OP, I didnt normalize anything. Read again and apologize.

(2,677 posts)still blow the shit out of it I suppose as it's used for live fire exercises.

(2,373 posts)Your comment made it clear that in other circumstances, the appearance of war vessels off shore is not unusual. I hope youll agree that the circumstances here are different.

(1,410 posts)Military activity and training off this stretch of coastline are normal, using live ammo is NOT.
Is this an attempt at intimidation, without a doubt.

(2,527 posts)Naval ship movements are planned months in advance, if not years. Port rotations, crew rotations, maintenance, exercises, all of it is a choreographed far in advance, beyond when the protests were scheduled. The 250th anniversary would have been planned years in advance. What ships they have there now would have had been pre planned to ensure they were not going to be at some other port or base and were in drydock or under maintenance a this time. Depending on the ship, its function, and ongoing naval operations, its presence there would have to have been accounted for elsewhere in the fleet.
Now the use of live ammo, that's not coincidence nor normal. Live fire is in designated ranges away from the public typically.

(2,836 posts)Camp Pendleton regularly issues live fire noise advisories, here's the current one:
https://www.pendleton.marines.mil/Portals/98/Docs/1%20Noise%20Reports/Noise%20Report%2018%20TO%2026%20OCT%20%202025.pdf?ver=VrtDxeoLmpmUzICFMYrxUw%3d%3d
They also shoot across the 5, so I'm not sure why the closure this time.

(15,595 posts)Navy Ships haven't done shore bombardment at Camp Pendleton since the 60's, but it has been done before.
During WWII, they used to do live fire practice all over San Diego County. There are still places you can find WWI and WWII era UXA in the canyons near more modern housing developments, and warnings still up where old ranges were located.
On Edit:
Camp Pendleton hosts Shore Landing training for the Marines Several times a year. Typically, if there's "Shore Bombardment" drill for the troop carriers, it's firing dud casings designed to shatter apart after a certain distance, to reduce possible injury or damage to the landing troops. There's typically an alert issued for shoreline and inland valley communities nearby that there's going to be a lot of noise and "booms" between roughly 10 pm and 1 am over a week period when training is occuring.
Any live fire practice is done on deserted islands in the missile range 200+ miles out.

(5,545 posts)Whether or not warships off shore, or firing towards shore are normal or not is a red herring.
The intent is what is completely new.
If your neighbor has a gun range in the backyard and your house is hit by the occasional stray bullet that is a problem. But it is nowhere near the problem of your neighbor aiming at your kitchen window with malice.

I will celebrate with my fellow Marines on our true anniversary, November 10!
On November 10, 1775, a Corps of Marines was created by a resolution of Continental Congress. Since that date many thousand men have borne the name "Marine". In memory of them it is fitting that we who are Marines should commemorate the birthday of our corps by calling to mind the glories of its long and illustrious history. - John A. Lejeune

Like ANTIFA, a Marine Corp anniversary per se does not exist!
