Santos says he's not getting away with his crimes after Trump commuted his sentence

Disgraced former congressman George Santos said Sunday he's not getting away with his crimes after President Donald Trump commuted his sentence for wire fraud and aggravated identity theft.

"I understand people want to make this into 'He's getting away with it.' I'm not getting away with it, I was the first person to ever go to federal prison for a civil violation ... I don't want to focus on trying to rehash the past and want to take the experience and do good and move on with the future. Repentance is an understatement. I have been dealt a second chance,” Santos said.

As part of his plea deal, Santos agreed to pay nearly $600,000 in restitution and forfeiture.

Asked on CNN's "State of the Union" if he planned to pay back donors, Santos said he would "do my best to do whatever the law requires of me."

Theft is not a civil violation idiot.

1. He didn't go to prison for a civil violation. He pled guilty to (and was convicted of) crimes.

3. The only reason anybody knows who he is is because he lied about absolutely everything

about himself and got elected to Congress. Everything he claimed about himself was false. So why should anyone expect him to start telling the truth now?

For the record, Santos was NOT "the first person to ever go to federal prison for a civil violation". Santos was convicted of federal criminal charges, not civil violations, for which he was sentenced to prison. He pleaded guilty to two felony counts of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft, which are serious federal crimes. Other charges included conspiracy to commit fraud, money laundering, and theft of public funds, stemming from a variety of schemes, including misusing campaign donor money for personal expenses and falsely applying for unemployment benefits.
