Trump's Fury at Dems Goes Nuclear as Crushing New Shutdown Poll Hits (TNR)

The Daily Blast With Greg Sargent
October 20, 2025
PODCAST
Trump’s Fury at Dems Goes Nuclear as Crushing New Shutdown Poll Hits
As Trump’s anger grows amid another poll slide, Democratic strategist Simon Rosenberg explains why Trump’s deep unpopularity should give you solace—even if beating him long term will be a brutal slog.

President Trump’s fury at Democrats over the government shutdown is escalating. First he angrily announced that he’s “terminated” the big tunnel project connecting New York and New Jersey, basically saying he’d done this to punish Chuck Schumer, an extraordinarily deranged act of direct retribution. Then he unleashed a rambling tirade filled with lies about “mentally damaged” Democrats’ shutdown stance. All this comes as a new CNBC poll finds Trump and the GOP blamed for economic damage over the shutdown by 53-37. This has driven his economic approval down to 42-55, the worst ever in CNBC polling, with his standing on inflation at an abysmal 34-62. We talked to Democratic strategist Simon Rosenberg, author of “The Hopium Chronicles.” He argues we should focus on the fundamentals: Trump is doing immense harm to the country, he’s deeply unpopular, and that will matter in the midterms—though Rosenberg also discusses why beating Trump and recovering from our authoritarian slide will be a brutal longer-term slog. Listen to this episode here. A transcript is here.

It just occurred to me: we are reading headlines about 'Trump approval hits new low'
nearly as regularly as those which say 'Trump erupts overnight on Truth Social' !

Some of us have been saying this for weeks. The grocery stores are a nightmare right now, and that's where the rubber hits the road. The meat department is a goddamn Tiffany's. You can be a MAGA who still needs ground beef and a roast chicken and it's fucking bonkers out there. That 34% approval is approaching the floor for Trump. If it breaks through, then he's losing MAGAs on inflation too. You can eat your ideology for a little while, but not forever.

Don't forget that Faux News was running a segment on the rise of socialism and all the related fear a few days ago. I didn't see it, but I read a post here where someone reported it. This is the kind of thing they get bombarded with. They are told the ills they face are Democrats fault. We're worse than Democrats now--we're radical leftists, and also terrorists.
This is why there were a few people who were arrested on the 18th brandishing guns as they drove by the enemy (protestors). Unfortunately, too, the hate they are being taught also comes from their church communities.
While these people hurt they blame us.

On some of the social media, particularly Facebook, I have noticed that the right wing voices no longer include any reasonable arguments or even citation of information. It is now nothing but insults.

That tells me that people who did have some grasp of reality are at minimum , going silent now, and I do know of some cases where they have definitely begin criticizing the fascism that is happening.

Some righties must have exposure to more sensible people, or are finally putting things together on their own. I say we should welcome them and hope that the severely indoctrinated base will get chipped away at.
We need Americans coming together.

At best, their arguments start out with (1) whataboutisms. When that doesn't work, the (2) strawman arguments come out. And when that fails, then comes the (3) name calling and playground-insult style attacks (i.e., "liberal tears" or "keep crying" or TDS).

But as you mention, a lot of them jump immediately into step 3 right off the bat!

every nation are complete losers and blame others for their problems. They only really create a problem when evil uses their hate as a tool to reach its own agenda. That, of course, has nothing to do with what that 30% want and think they are going to get. The GOP turned over the rocks that they lived under.

makes me wanna go cuckoo. So 42% approve of his handling of the economy overall while only 34% approve of his handling of inflation. Inflation is so interrelated to NEARLY every other aspect of the economy right now, I'm stunned at the variance.

That brings me to my next point. I dismiss a lot of info coming out of polls, because Americans don't know shit. There are still people who don't know the Affordable Care Act and Obamacare are the same thing. I hate watching pols on tube parroting "the American people are smart" or "the American people aren't stupid." THAN EXPLAIN HTF WE GOT HERE! I guess that's why I could never be a politician.

He said people aren't buying because tariffs are raising prices too much, and Lowe's is getting shortages as the stock they ordered pre-Chump are running out.
