NY-12: Manhattan Assemblyman (D) Joins Primary to Succeed Nadler in Congress

Alex Bores, a Democratic state lawmaker in Manhattan, said on Monday that he would join the open primary race to replace Representative Jerrold Nadler, who is retiring from Congress after three decades.

Mr. Bores, a former software engineer, said the rapid pace of technological advancement and its implications for American democracy had compelled him to run. He pointed to President Trump’s close relationships with wealthy tech executives as well as the omnipresence of artificial intelligence and other software that can distort reality, saying he felt that most Democratic leaders were ill-equipped to contend with such challenges.

“What we’re seeing right now is the president running a 21st-century version of authoritarianism while the Democrats run a 20th-century playbook,” Mr. Bores, 34, said. “I fear that if we don’t start electing a different kind of representative, my newborn son may never grow up in a recognizable America.”

His candidacy comes several weeks after Mr. Nadler, 78, said he would not pursue another term — a decision spurred in part by calls for generational change within the Democratic Party. Before announcing his retirement, Mr. Nadler had drawn a primary challenger in Liam Elkind, a 26-year-old nonprofit founder.

No idea who the guy is but really glad Nadler is retiring. I wish Eric Bottcher would run!
