Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsSo I called United Health Care to check
and be sure about whether my Shingrix shingles vaccine would be $0 cost as I had read on the Medicare.gov website for all part D plans. I wanted to be very sure given the high expense of this vaccine if not covered. Over the course of well over an hour on the phone with two different reps here is what went down. The linguistically challenged rep first asked me to spell it. No problem so I did. Then she put me on hold for a long time. When she came back she told me that I needed "prior authorization" from my doctor. I told her she was mistaken. She assured me she was not.
She then asked me how many milligrams was the dosage I was looking for. Unsure of whether to laugh or cry at such a question I did hold it together and asked her if she actually knew what a vaccine is. She grew quiet as though I had offended her. I asked again and added to it a request to know whether she would ask the same question for a flu shot. She explained to me that I either had to tell her how many milligrams of Shingrix I was looking for or how many milligrams per liter. Because I was now over 20 minutes into this call I asked to speak to a supervisor. I was then on hold for over 15 minutes. Nobody ever came on the line.
I hung up and called back hoping to get someone else and I did. Of course there is the lengthy identity verification process to go through before the similarly linguistically challenged customer service rep asked me what I wanted. I explained. The rep asked if she could put me on hold. I fearfully agreed. After about 15 minutes she came back on the line and explained to me that Shingrix was a chicken pox vaccine and she wanted to know if I had been vaccinated as a child.
While technically in the right ballpark I was surprised that she would ask me about being vaccinated for chicken pox as a child since she had my age info in front of her and the chicken pox vaccine wasn't around when I was a kid. But OK so she forgot she was talking to someone on Part D or whatever. She told me that my doctor would have to give a prior authorization and my co-pay would be $47.00 per shot. I told her she was wrong. She told me she was right. I told her to check with a supervisor. I went on hold for another 15 minutes. She came back on and told me that there was no prior authorization needed and that I was correct that there was $0 for any cost to me.
All of that just to get a very simple answer to a very simple question and verify that yes it is covered by UHC and yes there is no cost. Raking in the money by the truckload and not spending it on training so that you have knowledgeable customer service people and failing to select personnel able to communicate clearly with the market they serve.
Some might think I'm knocking the foreign accents but I am not. Bless everyone who wants to work but when a company places people in situations of customer service interaction on the phone the first priority is that they can be clearly understood in order to facilitate effective communication. When they don't they are doing a disservice to both the customer service personnel and the customers. This results from corporate mismanagement and greed and as we all know it is rampant in the business world.

(78 posts)I ask because if you haven't yet actually had the 2nd shot, you'll want to be prepared...look up 2nd dose Shingrix side effects....and if you're lucky, yay! But if you're average, it's going to be a miserable couple of days. Have your favorite headache remedy close by.
Still worth it, just be prepared.

Masked any after-effects I woulda felt from the flu shot that I got at the same time and in the same arm, though. So, yeah
lol.

(301 posts)I've had a few employers who used them for their preferred health care provider. They are the ones who always give me the most hassles, be it for lack of coverage for mental health conditions or their rude messages regarding whatever flex spending providers they partner with.

(38,643 posts)Shingrix is covered as a pharmacy benefit, not a A/B benefit.
Some vaccinations are covered under part B, some are covered under part D. The part D ones you (generally) have to go to a pharmacy to get (no prior authorization). The part B ones you can get at the doctor's office - I don't recall whether you can ALSO get them at the pharmacy or not.
Here is the breakdown: https://www.uhc.com/news-articles/medicare-articles/which-vaccines-does-medicare-cover
Its not as simple a question as you might think. (Same thing with diabetes supplies - which are covered 100% under the DME portion of Medicare (part of part B - even though you get them at the pharmacy, but only partially covered under part D); same things as glasses - which are covered if you need a prescription change because of cataract surgery, but only certain providers are allowed to provide them, and of those, only a few a re 100% paid - and finding out which ones are covered is a nightmare).

(23,882 posts)The good ole US health-care system as written by lobbyists for the insurance companies.
That part of Medicare is patterned after insurance.
I can't even count how many diabetics I saved from copays. Under multiple versions of commercial insurance, test strips were covered (with a hefty copay) under the prescription part of the plan. They were completely free under the Durable Medical Equipment portion of it. Most were completely unaware.

(2,120 posts)SO glad they didn't care to hire me, I could tell it was toxic when I walked in the door. The interview process itself was toxic.
I was out of work after a 25-year airline career ended in merge mania. I re-trained as a medical office assistant. Luckily I landed on my feet again with a 19-year second career.

(947 posts)They make things as difficult as possible, with as many small print exceptions to coverage as they can to ensure there will always be a way to fuck the citizens of this country out of our hard-earned dollars. Many people give up because they dont have the patience or time to waste on such nonsense which, make no mistake, is intentional on the part of the insurers.

(33,151 posts)You DO NOT want to fool around with shingles. My father had it. I was on an HMO with an insane deductible and had tested positive for CP as a kid. No regrets.
It's open enrollment. Get the hell off United Health Care now!

(5,545 posts)I understanding correctly that you are on a "Medicare" advantage plan?
I have regular Medicare and a no cost (Wellcare) part d plan. My Shingrix shots were free under part d.
I'm a retired registered nurse and shingles can be incredibly painful. Personally, I would pay almost anything for the vaccine if I had to.

(5,545 posts)When I got my first Shingrix I called the pharmacy, Publix, and told them that I had Medicare part D and they told me that the vaccine was covered and didn't require a prescription. The only vaccine that I had to have a discussion with them on was the measles, mmr. But I told them that my sister lives in an area in Texas close to the outbreak. Also she works closely with several staff members who are from Chihuahua where there has also been an outbreak. Even if that wasn't the case I would have wanted the measles vaccine anyway since it can be crippling or deadly for the elderly.

Greedy corporate bosses WANT us to give up so they can continue their fraud and get more $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ for themselves.
Every single one of my friends and family have been experiencing this same BS for 15 years. My niece will never know what customer service is supposed to do and how much it has changed.

(29,634 posts)They don't want to solve your problems, they don't treat you like a paying customer, and most reps don't have the authority to fix your problem (like adjusting a bill).
A couple of years ago, a customer service rep actually helped me and I was so shocked I was rendered speechless for a minute.
BigmanPigman
(55,165 posts)That would be more appropriate. I think their agenda is to frustrate us to the point that we just give up and allow the greedy corporations to continue to fleece us.
And you know what, I have always called the company's manager afterwards to compliment the customer service and pass it on to their management. They did keep track of that stuff.
I know this since when I had Cox Cable come out and set me up and as usual I contacted the company to give the employee credit they already knew that I had complimented a service rep in the past.
I also am more than happy to take a customer survey. I believe that they deserve to be notified by their bosses that they got positive feedback. I just did this with H&R Block and CVS in fact.

(5,913 posts)It is clear you're placing the blame w UHC having reps who can't speak and understand at a college level. It is long past the time for universal coverage w college or at least bright high school grads handling the call lines
