We have a First Former Nude Model of Dubious Virtue. Melanoma spends very little time at the WH anyhow, and she does almost no typical First Lady things - she hasn't had a project since that "Be Best" nonsense, or maybe when she made the Christmas decorations look like one of the circles of Hell. She just slinks around looking either angry or bored, when we see her at all. So who needs an East Wing any more?

More than a century to build. Less than a decade to destroy. The public education system completely failed to warn us of the fragility of our forebears' achievements, including itself. It will take a century of nationwide reconstruction to undo the damage already done, and who knows what horrors the next 3 years will bring? Looking at how fast things move these days, and the uncertainty of effecting policy in a nation where at least 1/5 of the population outright supports this total destruction, we just don't have the time.

Blame the schools for every g.d. thing, and I am sick and tired of it because it is wrong.

The schools have never been the problem. This has been a concerted attempt over many decades of the right trying to destroy the United States. The billionaires lie at the root of the problem. Demonizing public education is a big part of it, by the way. Murdoch getting hold of a large share of US media and twisting it into the disgusting UK-style media that blends opinion with news to the point nobody knows for sure what the truth is plays a huge part in this. So are religious beliefs and family upbringing.

Schools are not propaganda centers to "warn us of the fragility of our forebears' achievements." That is pushing forward an opinion. That is NOT their job. Public schools are supposed to be neutral. If you want slanted "education," go to one of those shitty private schools, schools which should not exist in the first place.

I recall the dread on my HS teachers' faces in December 1984. Some of them could see what was coming down the pike, although they were forbidden to speak of it with students during class. We lost a lot with the defunding of primary and secondary education over decades, including the imposition of an artificially-balanced "neutrality" that highly favored the rich and powerful.

Now those seeds have borne fruit in a society that overvalues celebrity and earthly riches. Billionaires carelessly own the government and the press, violent criminals are set loose upon the public to fray further our threadbare social fabric, Texas churches rewrite educational curricula for the nation, and every gain we've made since the 1930s (real progress) is about to unravel.

If it wasn't public education's job to educate the public to the existence of such threats, then there needs to be a chat about whose responsibility it was. By the time we started listening to warnings, it was already too late, so we have to do better next time should we be lucky enough to get a second chance.

If mindfully done, there would have been a lot to salvage.

Mango Mussolini has apparently always thought the White House was a dump, so he’s been “renovating” Lincoln’s Bedroom (or its bathroom) and of course pissing gold all over everything in the Oval and beyond.

He hates this country and he hates us. And by now, most of us return the favor.

A place to demuck, hang coats.

The second floor was added in 1942. They were doing secret construction work underground and the 2nd floor addition justified having the workmen and equipment there.

So far the news pretty much says it was "facade" that was scrapped. Portico and the overhanging roof and balcony (for the second floor double French doors). One part had more serious damage, but I can't figure out what part of the East Wing it even looks like.

On edit: That was yesterday's news. Today's looks rather more serious. But also that a historical society (an official WH-related one) went through and removed things of historical value, some for reuse, presumably in the new construction).

The idea that our court system will stop him is flawed because our justice system is political and only applies to people without wealth or influence.

55. MaddowBlog-It's not just the facade: Team Trump has wrecked much of the White House's East Wing
Wed Oct 22, 2025, 11:27 AM
Oct 2025

By Tuesday afternoon, it appeared obvious that a significant portion of the East Wing has been demolished, the president's earlier vows notwithstanding.

https://www.msnbc.com/rachel-maddow-show/maddowblog/s-not-just-facade-team-trump-wrecked-much-white-houses-east-wing-rcna239092

As the controversy surrounding the demolition project was growing, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt told Fox News that she believed the outrage to be “fake,” because nearly every president has made “modernizations and renovations” during his tenure. But we’re not just talking about modest alterations. Rather, in this instance, we’re talking about bulldozers.

While the news on Monday afternoon indicated that crews had torn down the entrance way to the White House’s East Wing, it became clear a day later that the facade wasn’t the only part of the structure affected. The Washington Post reported:

A demolition job that began Monday with the disappearance of the White House’s eastern entrance advanced Tuesday with the destruction of much of the East Wing, according to a photograph obtained by The Washington Post and two people who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the scene.

By Tuesday afternoon, it appeared obvious that a significant portion of the East Wing has been demolished, Trump’s earlier vows notwithstanding.

NEW: After The Washington Post reported Monday on the demolition of the "East Wing facade," a new picture obtained by Law Dork that was taken on Tuesday shows that a substantial portion of the entirety of the East Wing has been demolished.

Chris Geidner (@chrisgeidner.bsky.social) 2025-10-21T20:13:32.290Z

.....Of course, those aren’t just partisan complaints: Trump, acting at his own discretion, really is treating the White House as if it were his own personal property.

As we’ve discussed, the symbolic significance is impossible to miss: An authoritarian president is literally tearing down part of a national treasure because he wants a fancy ballroom to host parties for the elite.

The White House has reportedly asked that officials “refrain from taking and sharing photographs of the grounds, to include the East Wing, without prior approval from the Office of Public Affairs.” This probably won’t stop images from reaching the public, though the appeal suggests that Team Trump isn’t exactly proud of its handiwork.

Eleanor Roosevelt did not have an office in the East Wing; her staff initially used an office on the second floor of the Mansion, but she did initiate the use of the East Wing for first lady staff and offices during her husband's presidency. The formal office of the First Lady was later moved to the East Wing permanently in 1977 by Rosalynn Carter.

The East Wing of the white house was not Elinore Roosevelt's doing, neither the original structure built in 1902, nor the 1942 reconstruction, which was motivated by the need for a secret bomb shelter. And while her staff occupied it, she didn't.

No doubt there are many special things promulgated by strong, competent women that he has or will destroy. I don't think the East Wing is on point.
