Gov. Newsom deploying CA National Guard to support food banks statewide

SAN FRANCISCO -- California is stepping in as the ongoing government shutdown threatens food access for millions.

Governor Gavin Newsom on Wednesday announced the deployment of the California National Guard and California Volunteers to support food banks statewide.

The move comes as SNAP benefits are delayed for 5.5 million Californians.

The state is also fast-tracking up to $80 million in emergency funding.

Officials say this is a humanitarian mission and that the National Guard will not be acting as law enforcement.

The move mirrors similar action taken during the pandemic to keep families fed.

By regulation the President can call them to federal
Duty , including if they are already on state duty.

Federal orders supersede state ones once you are federalized. The control transfers away from the governor.

As opposed to the despotic federal government controlled by republicans, that only works to benefit republicans and hurt democrats, but often doesn't even work that well to benefit republicans either.

Maybe that's because government works best when it works for all Americans. Funny how that is.

California is a large producer of food so is logical for their state government to step in and fund a similar stopgap plan as all that money will be spent on food mostly if not entirely within California. The only catch would be if too much of that initial spend went to nonlocal food sources.
