General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI had a lovely encounter today at Costco, with an employee.
We were running low on household paper goods (tp, kleenex, paper towels) and I wanted to stock up before my surgery happens. We don't have a date yet, but we will, soon. I want to be ready!
Anyway. The person at the door who checks your receipt asked me if I'd like some help getting the load into my car. I said "Sure!" She hollered at a guy in a Costco vest who came over and we walked out to my car.
Got the trunk open and he started loading stuff in. I offered to tip him but he said he couldn't accept it; he'd get in trouble! I said I was sorry to hear that but I sure did appreciate his very timely help. He even took my cart!
He brightened my day and I hope I brightened his.

(3,137 posts)It's these little acts of kindness that help to restore my faith in mankind. When I go out in public and interact with someone who's kind or friendly or helpful or just simply smiles at me, it makes my whole day! I feel so good about it.
I'm glad this happened to you today. Thank you for sharing it with us.

(156,968 posts)I feel the same way; interacting with friendly people can really perk up your day and theirs too!

(64,828 posts)don't want to go into detail. And their prices are not going up as fast as other places - at least for what we buy.
While I am here, here is hope for a successful outcome.

I'm hoping for a successful outcome too. Fingers crossed!

The positive attitude gets passed on to their customers.

(38,035 posts)They get a discount on company stock making them almost an employee owned business. That is the most efficient way to run a business.
CaliforniaPeggy
(156,968 posts)I'd heard that this is an almost employee owned business and I was happy for them. Giving the employees a stake in the business makes them want to see it thrive. Very smart!

(757 posts)Just had their salmon for supper. Not cheap, but it is absolutely the best. Restaurant quality. Their hamburger is the best. (5 pounds in 1 pound portions). No need to drain the fat off.
Their gasoline is tier one, at sale prices. I have been using the optical department for a decade or more, and they are not a discount outfit. I wear Stetson frames and I have advanced lenses. The doctor was recommended by the doctor who did my cataract surgery. Never had my glasses fitted better, and I have been wearing glasses for over 70 years!
They are just the best

(20,056 posts)I'm about to have to go in for another surgery myself in my own cancer battle. Which always makes me feel pressed for time to bestow my thoughts.
Be well and live all your beautiful days to the fullest. You've always been a bright spot and deserve not to have to endure a long cancer treatment, so I wish you success and health kind lady!

(4,557 posts)I love Costco. I will say, that Publix is the same. I loved, when my mom was able to go to the grocery store, that they would take her groceries out to her car and would not accept a tip.

(4,557 posts)And bad things about Publix. But at least they help with the groceries!

(29,685 posts)but it used to be that all grocery stores hired high school kids to carry your groceries to the car and load them.

(100,133 posts)In both places I was asked if I wanted help loading my car and I said, Yes! TJs got me used to it, and if the employee at Costco forgot, I knew I could ask.
What a blessing. They even pushed my cart.
After I recovered and was no longer leaning heavily on a cane, I went up to the managers desk at TJs and told them just how much it had meant to me. I cant remember if I tried to find someone at Costco (its so much bigger and more complex) but I hope I did.
Best of luck and restored health to you, Dear Peggy, and accept all the help you need getting there.
CaliforniaPeggy
(156,968 posts)How fortunate to have those employees help you. I've had complete strangers ask if they can help me load my car, and I always say yes. It is truly life-saving.
And thank you for your good wishes on my upcoming surgery. Believe me, I'm not shy about asking for help! There are many folks who will help.

(8,999 posts)they are the best of the best...well, most of them. wink
The customers though. I don't know why but the Concord (CA) Costco has the meanest and nastiest customers ever. Just trying to get a parking space there is a battle of wits. People speeding around to get a spot! It's so bad, I wish I had another Costco I could go to closer, but alas.
Thank you for sharing this wonderful exchange to remind us that there are good people in this world still and Costco has some of the finest employees around here. I dread shopping there but they have some of the best offers out and I like that they take care of their employees with a good salary and benefits. Haven't been to Walmart in decades because of their business practices and how awful they treat their employees. Less pay, not enough hours for benefits, employees get on SNAP benefits, which is wage theft to me.
Thanks for sharing something positive in this world today. hugs .xx

(5,887 posts)I went there once, oh so long ago, just to check it out; I thought it was just like another Sam's Club.
Which really never suited me, Walmart will do for what I need and I do not need to fill out forms for the membership. My company even provides a substantial discount for the Sam's Club or it might even be Costco...Does Costco require a membership? I thought both of those stores required an extra annual fee.
But after your story, I may give Costco another try even though it is quite a bit further of a drive.
Lovely tale, dear Peggy; I wish you the best on your upcoming surgery.
