I have posted here on DU that I believe the East Room is hallowed space. I think that even the fact that the ballroom will block sunlight to the East Room is a travesty..

5. JFK's body lay in repose briefly in the East Room

of the White House before being transferred to the U.S. Capitol, where the President's body lay in state. (Per the JFK Library.org).
Note: it's the East Wing that is gone, not the East Room. Of course, who knows what's next...
