Jeff Bozos 'I don't see how anybody can be discouraged who is alive right now'

The future is looking bright, at least according to Amazon founder Jeff Bezos.

Fortune reported on Bezos' speech at Italian Tech Week 2025, where he shared his vision of the future — one that includes living in space and a lack of commutes.

Included among Bezos' predictions is the expectation that by 2045, robots will commute to work for us. More significant than that, though, is his prediction that within the next decade or two, millions will be enjoying life in space.

Bezos also shared his disbelief with those who predict the downfall of civilization due to AI and technological advances. AI, however, is already responsible for people losing jobs, and the data centers required to power the technology consume a massive amount of natural resources. Considering these factors, it's easy to see how people can predict doom and gloom with AI's continued use.

How can someone who heads up an outfit aimed at space flight maintain that "millions" would be living in space in 20 years? Such a statement requires complete ignorance of the overwhelming problems and pitfalls involved in near-Earth habitation, not to mention the engineering impossibilities in constructing such environments in a 20-year time frame.

Either he is outright lying with no expectation anyone hearing him would know any better, or he is verifiably delusional/insane. Of course, the average person has such a deplorable lack of critical thinking skills and/or general science knowledge that most just won't know the difference.

They fantasize they can escape the world they wrecked — by spaceships, or in bunkers on Earth with private armies and lots of technology. Rushkoff takes them seriously (as should we) but he writes in a style that exposes their batshittery and delusion as well, so I found it a fun read, and I recommend it to others.

We're hitting the edges of current technology, just as they're cutting the investments and man/brain power needed to bridge the gaps between the physical properties as they are now and the physical properties as they theoretically could be.
We (humans and the LLM auto-correct/auto-complete search engine that's currently being called AI) still haven't really begun to figure out how an organic brain develops consciousness and processes independent, intuitive thought.

Thats when you start getting the AI needed to replace humans and their potential for genius.
We also don't have enough of the technology that's self-replicating, not to mention self-repairing - because the Tech Bros, Corporate Heads, and Financer are addicted to making money instead of science.
Investing in Science means accepting or learning from failure as well as profiting off successes. But Failure is simply unacceptable to those with money or power.
Winner-take-all Wealth Creation or Social Celebrity is now the name of the game, and any whiff of Failure gets you "kicked off the Island" - out of one's circle of peers and any Social Media/marketing interest, into a trash heap, because, frankly, celebrity influencers and experts are fungible.
If you can't follow the "scientific genius" story line and make money or fame quickly, you're just a drone or worse - boring.

We need to make sure that AI pays a dividend for everyone. It's stunning to me that we don't focus on that. Pete's way ahead on this.

Bezos and Musk sometimes seem silly to me when it comes to living in space or on other planets. They're both extremely smart though. I think they emphasize that practical, even survival aspect of space travel because that's the most persuasive to most people.

The most persuasive for me is that it would be cool for our set of generations to achieve human exploration of Mars. It should be done in an international way.

Live there? Colonize? I don't think you can really do that until travel to Mars is no harder than, say, transatlantic travel was in the past. If you can't travel back and forth, you're effectively just stranded and isolated on Mars.
