Nigel Farage: Britain Has Had 'Too Many Unifiers'

Something remarkable is happening in UK politics. A relatively new party, with just five members of Parliament, has for months been leading polls on voting intention — ahead of the two that have dominated British governments for a century. At the center of this Reform UK insurgency is Nigel Farage, a man with close links to the American right and best known for his successful Brexit crusade.

Farage is one of the most recognizable people in Britain, and one of the most polarizing; a man spoken of both as the next prime minister and a national security risk. He is certainly among the country’s most influential people, and can be abrasive under questioning by journalists, as I’ve experienced before.

While the next election isn’t due until 2029, Farage believes growing discontent will bring it forward, and he plans to be ready. Yet his party’s rise in the polls came as it promised big tax cuts — since downgraded to an “aspiration” — and many question whether he can build a capable team and broaden his appeal beyond immigration.
