WASHINGTON (Reuters) -Democratic California Governor Gavin Newsom said in an interview aired on Sunday that he is considering running for U.S. president in 2028 and will make a decision after the 2026 midterm elections.
Newsom has made some moves this year to test the waters for a potential presidential run and has gained prominence within his party in confronting Republican President Donald Trump on a range of issues.
"I'm looking forward to who presents themselves in 2028 and who meets that moment," Newsom said on the CBS News program "Sunday Morning."
Asked if he was considering a run, Newsom said, "Yeah, I'd be lying (if I said) otherwise."

(23,115 posts)Just because he is outspoken and has a good media team doesnt mean he is the best choice for president.

(10,328 posts)Someone once said, "don't tell us why we should vote AGAINST your opponent -- tell us why we should vote FOR you" -- so, who are these 10 other Democrats you support for our presidential nomination?

(23,115 posts)Ive been pretty open that Whitmer is my favourite, having done more in one year with a one seat majority in the legislature than Newsom has done in two terms with supermajorities. Whitmer has the courage to govern fearlessly, unhesitatingly, wielding the power of her office to enact positive change that provides immediate benefit to the people of her state (even in the face of kidnapping and murder attempts)
Unfortunately, the writing seems to be on the wall that the DNC will not consider a woman for 2028 (they just spent $20 million to learn how to listen to men).
My sense is the nominee will be a straight white male not named Shapiro or Newsom.
At this point (did I mention its waaay too early), Id say the odds favor either Chris Murphy or Andy Beshear. They are almost certain to run, and in about 18 months, well see how the donor class responds. Both of them might make the bottom rungs of my top 10 - lets see what they run on, how they propose to restore democracy and undo the damage of the Trump era (it better include court expansion, even if they dont focus their campaigns on that issue).
Im sure Newsom will get some seed money from some of the less fascist tech bros, but Im not sure he can expand his fundraising beyond that - guess we will see.
Like I said, having a loud voice and a good media team doesnt make someone the best choice for president- Dems have a deep bench, and there should be lots of excellent candidates to choose from.

(1,875 posts)as a Michigander. Dems have tried two women now and both although overqualified got trounced by the orange dumbass. Whitmer doesn't have the chops. She lost me when she sucked up to Trump and she lost lots of other Dems I've spoken to in this state at that time. She blew it with her interaction with that scumbag. Big mistake and we can do better.

(23,115 posts)Regardless of her gaffe with Trump, she would make a great president.

(32,219 posts)I am taking it a step farther, I don't want a politician to run, I want someone like Malcolm Nance, the cruder the better.
Fiendish Thingy
(23,115 posts)Nance is a clickbait merchant, and not presidential material.

Newsome may not be perfect. But he is willing to fight and that's the most important characterisitic right now. The perfect President doesn;t exist, and if they did, they wouldn;t do us any good sitting quietly in the corner.

(23,115 posts)Other than suing to prevent deployment of troops in California, and collaborating with the PNW states to form a healthcare collective, I have not seen Newsom do much to actually fight back against Trump. He talks and trolls a lot, which is entertaining, but compared to Whitmer, Pritzker and others, I dont see much actual fighting.

(9,530 posts)But post your top ten. I see Pritzker and Whitmer who else?

but I imagine a HARD, hard sell in PA, NC, MI, WI, AZ in the general election.
republicans and their RW media apparatus have absolutely POISONED the rest of the country against anything coming out of California.
