Amazon looks to cut up to 30,000 corporate jobs, report says

Amazon will lay off up to 30,000 corporate jobs starting on Tuesday, as the tech giant looks to cut spending and address overhiring during the pandemic, according to a Monday report from Reuters.

Amazon did not immediately return a request for comment on how the layoffs could impact workers in the Seattle area.

Amazon employs about 50,000 people in Seattle and about 14,300 in Bellevue, making it the largest tech employer in the Puget Sound region. In 2023, Amazon reported it had 350,000 corporate employees companywide, though the company has not publicly updated its headcount since then.

Big tech companies have been cutting workers throughout the year to control costs as they boost spending on priorities such as artificial intelligence.

The layoffs will amount to the largest cuts to Amazon’s corporate workforce in the company’s history, according to a person familiar with the matter.
