Hundreds protest at Louisiana State Capitol against unfair election maps

BATON ROUGE, La. (NEWS 15) — Protests were held on the steps of the Louisiana State Capitol following a controversial vote by the state Senate during this special session to delay the 2026 election dates. The decision aims to provide more time to redraw the state's congressional map.

Protestors voiced concerns that Republicans may gerrymander districts to their advantage if the U.S. Supreme Court issues a favorable ruling.

Louisiana's African-American congressional members stood with hundreds to voice opposition to the legislature's actions.

Voters from across the state gathered to rally against what they view as an attempt to set the stage for eliminating at least one of two majority-Black congressional districts. Currently, Louisiana holds six seats in the U.S. House.
