Ya gotta love Florida

Naples Daily News: Top Stories: Collier dedicates part of Immokalee Road as 'Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway'

A major East-West thoroughfare in Collier Co. Who cares what voters think? They at least stopped the renaming right before the mostly Hispanic community and area on the east.

(From the Daytona Beach News-Journal, by C. A. Bridges, USA Today Network, FL)

"On Sept. 23, the Lake County Commission unanimously voted to designate Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway. County commissioner and former Florida legislator Anthony Sabatini, who spearheaded the resolution, posted a picture Oct. 1.

"IT’S OFFICIAL—Our Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway signs are up!" Sabatini posted to Facebook. "Lake County, FL is now the 1st local government in the nation to name a road after the great Charlie Kirk—every city & county in America should follow our lead."

The approval came after about 2½ hours of contentious and occasionally shouted debate over naming a street after such a polarizing figure.

One resident asked if it would be more appropriate to name a street after "someone who fought to serve and protect us, a true Lake County resident and brave American hero," referencing Lake County Sheriff's Office Deputy Bradley Link. Link was gunned down in an ambush during a Eustis firefight in August.

"How dare you use that deputy’s name for your petty bulls--t political argument! How dare you!" Sabatini said, calling the speaker a "disgusting person."

A sign has gone up for the new Charlie Kirk Memorial Highway in Lake County, Florida, in this Oct. 1, 2025 picture. The road was named after a controversial conservative podcaster killed in September."
