(1,895 posts)Its the kind of thing that would likely get you ostracized in Europe, or the stuff itself would likely be banned. Its more peculiar to Americans I think.
I knew one guy I worked with years ago. He never struck me as racist (Im not white), and we would have drinks and he seemed super funny and I honestly never felt any hostility.
I later had him as a friend on Facebook and he had a lot of stuff about German pride and everything short of screaming Seig Heil.
Some of it just seemed like more innocuous interests in German military planes and tanks, and Im sure there was some genuine appreciation for German culture and heritage, but there was definitely something a little darker, even though it wasnt overt.
Im not excusing Platners tattoo (besides he has other baggage), but the reality is I dont think most people would recognize Nazi symbols outside of the swastika. His wife probably just thought it was a strange and creepy skull. Sometimes people (epically when close) also put on blinders for these sorts of things. I see a certain senator from Vermont is doing the same.
Either way, Im not sure Id drag his wife into this.
