Some White House ballroom contractors go underground

"The site is under construction" is a sign that could greet visitors peering through the fence at the southeast corner of the White House, trying to catch a glimpse of where the East Wing once stood.

Instead, those are the words greeting visitors to the websites of several companies working on building the White House ballroom.

Some of these firms appear to be trying to lower their profiles (in some cases, literally, on social media) amid the sometimes vitriolic online reaction to the East Wing demolition and construction of the 90,000-square-foot, . None of the firms have been accused of any legal wrongdoing.

EAI Rolloff, a Maryland-based hauling company, has advised visitors to its homepage that the site is "Undergoing Routine Maintenance." There are no links or contact information listed.

Sounds like some of these contractors think they're going to make so much money on this project. Don't they know Trump's reputation of stiffing contractors?

1. I thought about that too. A friend of a friend got stiffed by Trump for $1 million for work done on the Old Post Office

2. Instead of simply saying the site is closed or taking it off line they lie and say it is routine maintenance.

The contempt is palpable.

3. I suspect they are getting a lot of rightly justified criticism

for not saying no. I also would not be surprised to learn that a lot of them are seeing their other customers quietly firing them or backing out of contracts. In other words, they just tanked their businesses.

4. I hope they get stiffed by Trump.

Like he has done to so many contractors before.

5. McCrery never had much of a website.

Just a "for commission inquiries, call..." front page.

Such a project should be prestigious for the entire Design and Construction team. Instead, it's shameful.

6. It's pretty standard

For many architectural firms to have, shall we say, minimalist websites. The designs are meant to do the talking.

Many firms have portfolios, staff listings, news, research articles, "about us" sections on their websites.

My firm has a JEDI page - Justice, Inclusion, Diversity and Equity.

Do we do projects we should be ashamed of? No.
