(24,055 posts)Without it, every bill will get an up or down vote, and every senator will be on the record - no more will bills just fade away due to filibustered obstruction without a floor vote.
In It to Win It
(12,809 posts)Let them feel the electoral consequences of doing actual unpopular shit. All the filibuster does is allow them to draft and propose these message bills knowing the filibuster will prevent them from ever passing.

(4,152 posts)Let them take the political blow back for getting rid of the filibuster and for their own shitty legislation. They desperately want us to sign on to that shit sandwich.

(9,225 posts)He actually announced he wants to start testing them again. It's been over 30 years since we've done this.
Maybe he thinks it's time for an new capitol building, and he plans to demolish the old one using the "nuclear option".

(24,055 posts)Kill the filibuster, and open the government without reinstating the ACA subsidies - that will turn out great for Republicans in an election year.
And once Dems have the trifecta again, they can expand the court and Ram through progressive bill after bill restoring democracy without fear of it being overturned by the MAGA court!
Renew Deal
(85,349 posts)And then Democrats and then republicans. Before you know it, there will be 50 people on the Supreme court. All you have to do is continually add as many justices as you need to get the result you want. What can possibly go wrong?
Fiendish Thingy
(24,055 posts)The more seats on SCOTUS, the less power each individual Justice has, and the more difficult it will be to form cohesive ideological blocs that vote in lockstep unison.
Governing from a fear of what the opposition might do, rather than with the courage to wield power unhesitatingly to serve the people, is shameful and deserving of permanent minority status.
If Dems expand the court, and Ram through progressive bills that restore democracy, protect rights, and provide tangible benefits to all the American people, they wont have to worry about what Republicans might do, because voters would never again give Republicans the trifecta of power in Washington at least not in our lifetimes.
Effective, fearless governance, rather than gridlock and obstruction, is the way to earn permanent majority status.
Renew Deal
(85,349 posts)Are you OK with Republicans having permanent majority status?

(24,055 posts)Not sure what your point is
My point is, if Dems govern fearlessly, rebuilding democracy, restoring rights, delivering tangible benefits to the people, without fear of what the Republicans might do, the voters will reward them with majorities for the foreseeable future.
It will be much harder to divide voters with fake culture war issues, when every voter can say I have affordable healthcare!, I make a living wage, billionaires are finally paying more taxes than I am
etc.
Volaris
(11,794 posts)That'll fly.

(3,577 posts)And whats in the works is the Supreme Court gutting the Voting Rights Act, in conjunction with Republicans further disenfranchising Democratic voters with gerrymandering/redistricting.

Lucky for me I can't get pregnant,
and I suppose unluckily for me there seems
no chance that I would GET anyone pregnant in the immediate future...
'Course, if they do it I suppose I'll get SNAP back for the 'last three months',
since I am under 65 but not by much,
and will be scrounging for food for two years....

(12,809 posts)Let the voters actually feel the consequences of electing Republicans.

(5,250 posts)to be able to UNDO what they would have the power to do RIGHT NOW,
without the filibuster standing in their way!
They have no shame, and believe that GOD is on their side!---
Of course they could nuke the filibuster for THIS specific purpose only,
the appropriation bill that would reopen the government---
those senate filibuster rules can be written any way you please,
so the GQP could very EASILY reopen the government any time they like,
and with no consequences for any future issue whatsoever!

(60,429 posts)The nuclear option Im hoping to heat about is the one where Trump, on Bobby Jr.s advice, enters the interior of a nuclear reactor for ten minutes with no radiation suit to prove that you dont need vaccine to ensure that you wont get covid. It will give you immunity from prosecution, too, for as long as you live.

(55,808 posts)one party rule. That's why Trump wants to ditch the filibuster.
SSJVegeta
(3,125 posts)If people elect a party into the majority, that party should be allowed to govern.
Laws, checks from other branches and ultimately states rights -which the constitution is clear about, is what will protect us from becoming a permanent dictatorship.
The GOP is trying to use "the fillibuster" as an excuse to deliberately not govern. That's insane.
bucolic_frolic
(55,808 posts)I believe you are misinterpreting the situation. They are not using the filibuster. Democrats are using it. GOP is attaching blame to the filibuster.
SSJVegeta
(3,125 posts)It isnt actually a fillibuster though.
Minority rights are not protected with this in any way since the majority can change it at any time.
Prairie Gates
(8,477 posts)These airy claims that it protects against fringe legislation from 50+a feather is just so much bullshit.

(4,012 posts)There is, obviously, nothing in the Constitution about the filibuster.
It's an accidental side effect of a rewrite of the Senate rules early in the 19th Century. I know of no evidence that it was the intention of the drafter of the rules. It was just a loophole that some clever person recognized, and it immediately became what it has been for the majority of its history: A way for a minority of states to frustrate efforts to free the slaves, initially, and then to actually effect the 14th Amendment, a mere 90 years after it was enacted.
bucolic_frolic
(55,808 posts)than majority rule because it prevents marginal ideas from being passed into law. Not only 50% but 60% of legislators voted for it. Just like needing 2/3 to override a veto. Great ideas have a greater majority.
dpibel
(4,012 posts)The filibuster only applies to ending debate on a bill.
Once that's done, 50% is all it takes. So 60% can vote to end debate. Doesn't mean 60% vote for the bill.
Are you arguing that minority ideas are not heard and considered in the House? That seems like a bit of a hard sell.
There's a difference between "heard and considered" and "minority veto."
Gore1FL
(22,981 posts)It should not take 60 votes every time to pass every bill. It's been abused by the right and needs to go away forever because it no longer does what you state.
